CPTSD is not primarily about what happened to us. It's about how what happened to us turned us into someone we didn't choose. The "just get over it" people don't understand that. We don't "just get over" who we've become. We have to recondition, rewire, reshape ourselves.

True: it's a pain in the ass to have to work every day to influence our thoughts & choices more than our default trauma condoning does. Also true: that pain in the ass is worth taking on so that everybody & everything else doesn't control us like they so desperately want to.

Our bullies & abusers worked every day to make us feel like garbage. They installed programming that would put their efforts on autopilot, long after they'd disappeared from our life (or even their life). Pay them back by rooting out that programming & annihilating it today.

Nobody reading this was given a "choice" in what to believe or how to feel about ourselves. That "choice" was made for us, by our abusers & bullies, & over time congealed into our conditioning. Recovery is self-compassionately waking up to the realistic choices we DO have, now.

CPTSD recovery is life management. I know we all have "trauma processing" fantasies about profound "ah-HA!" moments that change everything-- & those do happen-- but 90% of this really is realistic, unglamorous self-care that has nothing directly to do w/ our trauma or past.
