"What, is it demon business?" He looked up. "Would you believe it if I said so?" I almost laughed. "I'm not going to help you lie to me." The corner of his mouth lifted. A fraction of a smile, and my heart skipped a beat. Weird.$

In her knee-length yellow dress, her apron covered in splotches of dirt and water, my mother stood over a table covered with fresh flowers. Her dark hair fell in loose curls out of her bun, but she was too focused to fix them. With a hand wrapped around her chin, she stared at the array of flowers, solving some critical design problem in her head. In the smear of colors before her, at least one did not belong, and she would find the culprit. Or one was missing, and she would find its home.
Beside me, my father leaned over the table with childlike amusement. He picked up a tulip and twirled it, beginning to peel back the layers and look inside when a smack he hadn't seen coming hit his wrist and the tulip was plucked from his fingers.
“Don't ruin my flowers.” My mother said, a playful lilt in her voice. “If you like them that much, you can water the ones in the garden.” She quickly added, “Please be gentle this time.”
The glint in his eye said he remembered last time too and would stop just short of whatever he thought would get him in trouble—as if my mother would ever really be angry with him.
My father pushed off the table and tossed me a conspiratorial grin. “Would you like to see what I’ve been practicing?”

“Made us some tea.”
I raised a brow. “Where—how?”
“Found a kitchen. Needed a bit of dusting, but it still works. There’s no food of course, but we can hunt and forage in the woods and cook here. Oh! And I think there may be a way we can manage hot baths. There isn’t running water, but we have ways of heating it and with how heavily it was snowing this morning…”
He spoke so excitedly, like a child telling someone about their newest discovery.
Setting the book aside, I reached out to take the tea. The side of the mug burned enough to scare the palms of my hands away. A gentle mix of herbs greeted my nose on tufts of steam.
I listened to the eagerness in Stabby’s voice, the catches in his breath when he remembered another detail he’d forgotten to tell me. We’d only been apart for an hour or so, and he talked like he had a year’s worth of news.

“We should be smart about this,” he said. I tried not to let my mind linger on the gentleness in his low voice or the way his thumb swept across my cheek.
Warmth bled into my side from his other hand as it pressed into the waist of my thick winter coat, and I found myself melting against the stone archway, struggling to stay focused.
My hunt—that’s what mattered. But maybe I could do both. Maybe I could let Stabby frolic in his old fort, let him sketch things and explore for a while if it made him happy. It was more time stolen from my hunt, but if he was right that there was something here that could help…
“We’ll kill it. I promise,” he said, as if he could read my thoughts. “And when I’m finished here, I’ll be your bait, as long as you want me.”
My heart skipped a beat, but I looked up just in time to see his subtle smile falter, to hear his breath catch. Didn’t sound like the even inhale of an honest man. The look in his eyes seemed genuine, not that I could ever know for sure. “As long as I want you?”
“Yes.” The word came out in a breath. He knew what I’d do to him if he lied.
“Fine.” Both hands on his sides, I pushed him away, and with one last sweep of our surroundings, I picked up my pack and let Stabby determine our next steps.

Hours later, my house was a mess, my bookshelf emptied, and I’d found absolutely nothing on giant snakes. Nothing on demons, either, not that I’d been looking. I had, however, become sidetracked reading my old faerie tales meant for children.
For my sixth birthday, I'd gotten a book of faerie pranks, though most of them required magic to carry out. On the inside of the cover in my father's ornate script was a dedication:
“To my partner in mischief: I strive to be your worst influence, and I am eager for the day you surpass me.
P.S: Hide this one from your mother.”

My legs ached, sore from the kneel I'd held for minutes, hours—I'd lost track. With his wounds patched, my hands idle, and the two of us encased in darkness, I was all too aware of how close we were, how unnaturally calm he seemed. For a week, he'd been so closed off, and now he was just telling me things, like the pain was no bother and there was nothing at all contentious between us. The medicine must've worked too well—was I sure I'd only given him one leaf?
Bracing myself on the stone bench beside him, I pushed to my feet. Stabby's fingers slipped from my hair, drawing a line down my back and falling to my hip, where he didn't immediately let go.
I drew in a shaky breath. What next? Shit, I hadn't thought that far. "We should, um, find somewhere for you to rest."
His leg grazed mine as he kicked once, making a splash and a snort. "Are we going to swim there?"
He laughed, but when the medicine wore off, Stabby was going to hate me for what I’d done to his books.
"We'll have to go upstairs," I said. "Do you think you can walk?"
A smile lingered in his voice. "What will you do if I can't?"
Exhausted, I sighed. "I never thought I'd have to ask you this but please, could you be serious for one moment?"
He made a contented hum. "You said please."

The pathways in front of us were too dark, resistant even to moonlight. “I’m not leaving you alone out here.” I said.
“You saw him. I know you did.”
“I don’t know what I saw, but if there’s something out here then I—”
Erine didn’t stay to listen. I fumbled for the knife in my boot but by the time I looked up she was gone. Guessing a direction, I sprinted.
With every desperate step, the walls along the path seemed to stretch themselves taller, drawing deep shadows, chilling the air until it hurt to breathe. My fingers turned to ice beneath my gloves and I shivered, my heartbeat drumming in my ears. I opened my mouth to call Erine's name, but I couldn't find my voice.
Darkness from the edge of the courtyard crept closer, flickering. My grip on my knife tightened. A primal fear crept over my shoulders, scraping the back of my neck.
It could be anything, and I wouldn't see it coming until it was too late.

The enormity washed over her again. Lark pressed palms to her
face. "What did you do, Neil?"
"I just told a reporter friend-under condition of anonymity," he winked like that should fucking matter, "—that there was a story there!
There's no way it'll come back to you."
"It already has! I got a call from Marshall promising me legal action
for breaking my NDA!"
"But you didn't do it." He sounded smug, like he'd found a magic
loophole.
"Guess what! If my boyfriend knew it, then I obviously did break my NDA!" which was frustrating because she'd never told Neil or anyone else, but he was smart enough to realize songs he'd heard her practicing in the apartment eventually became international hits over the last year, and she'd been singing them before the album came out.
The problem wasn't that she thought he wouldn't notice. The problem was she'd thought he loved her enough to keep his mouth shut.
The problem was she'd been stupid and trusting.
