It was one experience driving through her town, a completely different one to walk through it. More stores appeared empty—though how many were because she arrived before opening?—their gates shuttered. Walls of rusted steel indicated there was no life to be entertained here. The brick buildings had cracks in them, and some had fallen onto the sidewalk, where vines, from overgrown plants in swollen pots, crept along it, and she had to step over them to avoid tripping.
As she walked towards Mary’s diner, she noticed a few posters on a closed toy shop that didn’t used to be here when she was a child. Another store had a large FOR RENT sign that showed wear from the weather. The others were Missing Person posters.

No humble blacksmith’s daughter—no matter how motivated her parents were regarding her education—could reasonably be expected to navigate an encounter with The Foolish Desire to Dance with One’s Enemies Across a Bed of Nettles. However, there wasn’t a child in all of Dreer who didn’t learn three simple rules.

The first rule was never, ever get distracted. Keep your eyes on your task. Don't dawdle. Don't even look. Acknowledging them gave them power; made them more real.

The second rule was always be polite. Which is why, when he cheerfully said, “Good day, fair maiden. And where are you going on this fine afternoon?”

I promptly replied, “Good afternoon, sir. I am going this way.” Keeping my attention fixed ahead of me all the while. Incidentally, that was the third rule; don’t tell them anything they don’t already know.

“I think not.” Foolish grinned, revealing once more his too-sharp cuspids. “I think I shall wait here until you wither from thirst, and beg me for the slick from my tongue like the fragile animal you are.”

“Would you…” I bit my lip. If there was any lesson more ingrained than the rules I had already broken, it was to never ever bargain with faeries. I wasn’t so foolish as to think there were no fates more terrible than starving to death in the wilderness for his entertainment.

But I was sixteen, and I didn’t want to die.

He thrummed his fingers on the table and mused, “Do you think you can steal a baby and pretend its yours?”
Her lips pursed together as she seriously considered the idea.
“I was joking, Songxiu, do not steal a baby—”
“I would be divorced otherwise, stealing a baby sounds like the better option.”
He didn’t reply to that, instead drinking the alcohol he still refused to give her; his cheeks flushing a red that always made him look merry and radiant. Curse him.
“Fine. I’ll go to more doctors. If they call me a hag—”
“They will not call you a hag.”
“—if they call me a hag, then you will have to give me wine.”
“Fine, and I will pay for it.”
Her lips curled up, and she pulled herself up off of the table, staring at the bottle that Lianyu was drinking himself. “It’ll taste sweeter then,” she said, cheering up slightly. “And I get to choose which one.”
“That might be too much considering your tastes—”
With a glare, she stressed, “I get to choose.”
“Fine, fine.”
