The People Holding Up the Internet. Amazing to see how much of the modern internet still depends on the volunteer work of individual people. 4 billion phones rely on the time zone database, a text file edited by just two people in their spare time. [sheets.works]

AP Stylebook warns against anthropomorphizing AI systems: “Avoid language that gives them human characteristics… Instead, explain what a system does, how well it performs, who built it and who could be affected by it.”
APStylebook @APStylebook

Artificial intelligence systems do not think, feel, want or understand. Avoid language that gives them human characteristics. This is called anthropomorphizing, when we ascribe human traits, emotions or behaviors to non-human things, such as animals or inanimate objects.
Instead, explain what a system does, how well it performs, who built it and who could be affected by it.

The provocation for this talk was: "How can IR be a force for societal good?". I chose to begin by reflecting on one of IR's inconvenient truths: Our work is often motivated by grand ambitions about information access but IR has been a testing ground for user surveillance and attention farming. 5/
Screenshot of slide with the title "An inconvenient truth about IR". The slide follows the Expectation/Reality meme format.

Under "Expectation..." it shows "Our mission is to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful" from Google’s mission statement (https://about.google/company-info/) and "Information retrieval is the study of techniques for supporting human cognition with information artefacts sourced from large collections" from https://dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/3190580.3190584.

Under "Reality..." it mentions: online user surveillance, harvesting user attention, and AI persuasion.
