Californians! Short ballot proposition guide from a measured materialist socialist here- they are CRAZY IMPORTANT THIS YEAR. DON'T SKIP THE MIDTERMS JUST BECAUSE CALI VOTES BLUE. Prop 1- Bond to build housing. Always good, if just a small cork in a big river. Prop 2- Give the state a bigger coffer

Thinking about this again & reminded of @filmcow.bsky.social ‘s Llamas with Hats epilogue. Honestly my favorite take so far on when a monster realizes all that they’ve done. It’s not redemption, it’s not forgiveness, but it’s something other than all the pain they dealt before. youtu.be/olxXLDqDzcU

Me, I'm interested in seeing a story like "what if the bad guy didn't die immediately after doing one good thing and had to reckon with living in a world that fears and despises them?" I doubt we'll be seeing that in big franchises these days, so I'll be writing it myself.

Even stories I like such as She-Ra and Steven Universe have found it a difficult tightrope to walk. Metaphor is a fine tool for articulating what it feels like to have anger so all consuming you feel like you could burn down the world, but let the writing get too literal & viewers miss the analogy.

This was relatively forgivable with Vader in the OT because back then him blowing up a planet is quickly glossed over, so to kids it reads like a space opera dramatization of a family argument. Much harder to do that for Kylo where the people he kills have names and faces and we see them suffer.

Snoreterra @snoreterra.bsky.social · 14/10/2026
A big hazard I see in writing redemption stories is that sometimes the writers might mean it on a metaphorical level of reconciling with family or mending friendships, but they get so in depth in visualizing the crimes onscreen that the metaphor is lost and it comes out as "forgive mass murderers."

Cover of Maybe Tomorrow #1, by Max Wood, Daniel Caval, Andworld Design, and Kat Overland. There are two cubes on the cover, each stretching past the margins. There's a bald man in glasses in one, and a woman with glasses in the other, both wearing professional jumpsuits. The cover of Bun & Tea: A Serial Comics Magazine issue one. The main image is an illustrated bunny with her tongue out, a cup of coffee under her front paws. The cover of La Voz de MAYO, by Henry Barajas, J. Gonzo, Claire Napier, and Bernando Brice. The cover features an older Mexican man, his face split -- one half of him is in a military uniform and helmet, on the other half he is in plain clothes with an advocacy button.

On the first National Coming Out Day, in 1988, ACT UP stormed the FDA headquarters to demand faster development of HIV/AIDS treatments.
[Photo of QUEER AND HOW WE GOT HERE page 38]
“On the first National Coming Out Day, in 1988, ACT UP protested the slow testing of potential AIDS medications. They pict a unique target with the power to make the changes: the FDA headquarters.”

[Full-page illustration of of ACT UP protesting at the FDA headquarters, which looks like a boring office building. Riot cops guard the door. Overhead, ACT UP has hung a “SILENCE = DEATH” banner and various posters. Protesters in white lab coats with “FDA Has [red handprints]” written on the back hold up their bloody-looking hands. Protesters doing a die-in hold gravestone-shaped signs reading “Dead from lack of drugs,” “R.I.P. killed by the F.D.A.,” “Killed by the system,” “I died for the sins of the FDA,” “Dead from lack of dextran sulfate.” Overlaying the illustration are protest chants: “The FDA has blood on its hands!” “FDA! Don’t delay! Fifty-two will die today!” “Act up! Fight back! Fight AIDS!”]

“They forced the FDA to approve and release drugs faster, and got people with AIDS involved in designing the drug trials. ACT UP’s media coverage created a powerful image of people with AIDS and their allies.”

National Coming Out Day is way deeper than a social media trend. October 11th was chosen because it’s the anniversary of the 1987 March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights.
[Photo of QUEER AND HOW WE GOT HERE page 36]
“In the 1980s, the AIDS epidemic began ravaging the gay community. Gay organizations made heroic efforts to care for the sick, but the Reagan administration’s response was murderously slow. Being out, loud, and public was a way to cut through stigma, media silence, and government neglect.”
[reproduction of a poster which reads “Fighting For Our Lives: An AIDS Candlelight March, May 2, 1983. It’s illustrated with a drawing of a man in a sweater crying and holding up a candle.]
“In 1987, more than half a million people joined the March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights. The AIDS Memorial Quilt visualized the tragedy with grave-sized panels, sewn by loved ones, spread over the National Mall.”
[Drawing of people walking around the AIDS quilt. One of the panels is visibly labeled “Rock Hudson.”]
[Drawing of Narrator-Hazel, commenting on the page.]
“The quilt was first displayed with 1,920 panels and has since expanded to almost 50,000 panels—a fraction of the mounting deaths.”

“More men were ‘outed’ by illness than had ever come out before—even celebrities at the highest echelons.[Photo of QUEER AND HOW WE GOT HERE page 37]
“The march also introduced the nation to ACT UP, a group fighting for their lives for treatments to be developed faster. Their motto: ‘United in anger and committed to direct action to end the AIDS crisis.’”
[Illustration of a bloc of ACT UP marchers carrying a banner that says “SILENCE = DEATH.” Next to them, a guy in a wheelchair holds a sign saying “ACT UP: AIDS Coalition To Unleash Power.” Other marchers hold up protest signs with Reagan’s face and “AIDSGATE” written underneath, and a sign with a pink triangle, evoking the holocaust. Together, the marchers shout: “Act up! Fight Back! Fight AIDS!”]

“Following the march, activists formed ACT UP direct-action chapters all over the country.”

“Jean O’Leary and Robert Eichberg proposed National Coming Out Day for October 11, the anniversary of the march.
[Drawing of Jean O’Leary talking]
“As long as the overwhelming majority of our community remains closeted, we will continue to be dismissed.”

[Drawing of Robert Eichberg talking]
“With Coming Out Day happening, we can expect this country to go through some real self-examination.”

It's the opposite equivalent to how featuring actors from marginalized groups in a film often gets it branded as "political" even if the story has nothing to do with politics. Just seeing people of color, women, queer people, etc on the posters & trailers is enough to cause an Internet tantrum.
