While in Pittsburgh for work I caught Beach House on their brief fall tour. A couple dozen of their songs are hymns to me; I lean on and aspire to their sturdy grace. I expected the show to move
me, and it delivered. I’m surprised that the blemishes are what did it: Alex Scally flubbed a couple arpeggios, and Victoria Legrand couldn’t quite reach the low night of “Lazuli” or high wells of “PPP.”

So immaculate are their recordings that I hadn’t much considered the band’s corporeal form. But there they were, invigoratingly relatable: wearing uncomfortable shoes in a hot room; debuting bits and banter at work; embellishing a little to meet a moment; dancing goofily; capable of producing true, enduring beauty; and trying to reach that standard.

Defector Publishes What Corporate Media Won't defector.com/products
screenshot of a subscription appeal from defector.com:

Earlier this year, Defector published a profile of skater, actor, and photographer Jason Lee. It is stylishly written, recounts his improbable career trajectory, and gives you a real sense of what makes him tick. And then, about halfway through, Lee melts down in response to a gentle question about his relationship with Scientology.

This profile was originally slated to run in a national magazine, but that magazine’s editors killed the story after Lee’s publicist invoked lawyers. So although Lee is the nominal subject, the piece doubles as a profile of contemporary PR tactics and the browbeaten media ecosystem in which they are deployed.

Being willing to ask Jason Lee about Scientology is not quite publishing the Pentagon Papers, but the lack of proportionality between the innocuous question and over-the-top response tells you how busted that corner of media is. These are the late stages of what Patrick Redford called the triumph of marketing over journalism; it is one reason the authorized celebrity documentary has become a defining form of this moment.

Defector can publish work like this profile for two main reasons. First, unlike National Glossy Magazine Co., we don’t need to preserve access to future potential profile subjects who share representation with Lee. And second, our subscribers enable us to pay for lawyers of our own to fend off nuisance suits threatened in response to our reporting.

Strike a blow for journalism with a Defector subscription. You can try a month for just $1.

this is a really cool job for someone with a data/business background who likes what Defector is doing
We are hoping to find someone who’s a jack of all trades and master of some. The previous person in this role came to us with a strong background in data science and product, and leaves us having become a credible financial analyst, newsletter copywriter, customer service manager, video production coordinator, and restorative justice facilitator. Perhaps you are currently a digital marketer, or ad salesperson, or audience engagement manager who is excited about broadening your skillset in operating an indie media company. There are countless little operational tasks that have to be done here, and everyone has to play utility roles enthusiastically whenever necessary.

loved both the original story here (a defector subscriber close-reading a pair of blogs with their 7th grade class) and giri's email about sportswriting as mana for the emergent fanatic. reading and discussing things with others is beautiful. try it with defector for $1: defector.com/products
Defector blogs can be put to many uses, but their best use is nourishing the youth. One of our subscribers is a seventh-grade English teacher who recently structured a lesson around two Defector stories on the same March Madness buzzer-beater. Apparently the kids had a great time, except for the Duke fans, so it’s all working as intended. We are always eager to work with educators to provide classroom access, so long as they keep in mind that Ray Ratto blogs are rated PG-13 (may contain crude humor and mild peril).

As a kid, I loved tearing open those sticky blue plastic bags to read the Star-Ledger and the Times on the dogshit Isiah Thomas-era Knicks. Along with the box scores, I started paying close attention to bylines, well-chosen verbs, pungent quotes, and quality of take. Language is so powerful that it can help a child fall in love with basketball, in spite of the dishonor his 23-59 team brings to the sport.

I dread a future where childhood sports fandom is devoid of reading. There is amusement to be had in viral podcast clips and deep-fried memes, but nothing steeps you in the esoterica of true fandom and enriches your understanding of the characters that populate this strange world like good writing. There are fewer outlets doing that kind of writing than when I was growing up, but Defector will never give up on turning tangy phrases for the curious reader seeking to make sense of what they watched.

I am still that reader; perhaps you are, too. Or maybe you’ve got an emergent fanatic in your life who would appreciate good sportswriting. If so, you can try a month of Defector, which comes with the ability to curate gift links for that reader, for just $1:
