I've been saying the like for years....Orangism is missing a trick. We need dancing Orangemen, on stilts, juggling, unicycles, giant puppets, the 12th as Mardi Gras. That would be an Orangefest.

Just spotted that this from last year is open access now - The Republic of Newtownards. It imagines the good version of a reunified Ireland. It's in An Clogán, a new socialist republican magazine - well worth checking out the whole thing. www.anclogan.ie/the-republic...

Great article, thank you. I too am from Newtownards (but sojourned in Belfast and latterly Bangor (!)). I was aware of the Republic of N'ards and see reflections in bodies like 'For Another Path' which fought and won preventing a Greenway on the Coastal Path and Ards and North Down Cycle Campaign.

Completely useless..essentially saying 'be careful out there'. The 'Road to Zero' campaign is completely discredited. Reduce speed limits, act on learner drivers and build active travel infrastructure now.

IMPORTANT: The Dutch invested €595 million annually on urban biking, resulting in €19 BILLION saved in public health care costs alone. That’s how smart governments do the math on investing in better mobility. Let’s be clear— it WASTES public money to NOT do it. #CityMakingMath HT @modacitylife.com

These campaigns DON'T WORK! Hard hitting ads have been on our TVs for years and death and serious injuries keep going up. Get on with reducing speed limits, changing how people learn to drive, restrictions on young drivers, and give the £2.5 to the police to improve enforcement on phone usage.

Wales saved 3 children's lives last year by reducing 30mph limits to 20mph everywhere. That would be much more effective than telling kids to 'wear bright clothing'. Let's do it!

'This has enabled the Department to reinstate a full road safety advertising programme'..it didn't work last time..and one person a week will die this year again. Do something new...province wide urban 20mph speed limits would work better.

'Road Safety Messages' will not eliminate road deaths in NI. Blanket 20mph in urban environments would be a step forward. We're stuck at 50 deaths a year...doing the same old things will ensure we get the same 50 deaths every year.

Religion isn't history. (Yet? 😉) Maybe as part of a wider Philosophy Course? I don't think history teachers are going to run towards teaching RE too. Religion would maybe fit with ethics and citizenship.

I disagree...I think religion is a part of everyday life and children need to learn about it. However, the form of religious education in NI needs a big overhaul so that is education and not indoctrination.

It's the Seasonal Reposting Competition! Repost this over the weekend, and on Sunday one lucky person will win a signed copy of one of my books. For you or the #crossword addict in your life: 50 fiendish @theguardian.com #puzzles and all the stories behind them: boatmancryptics.co.uk/crossword-bo...
Boatman - the first 50 reportedly makes a great present or holiday read, exemplified by this image of the book opened to show the story behind the Shipping Forecast puzzle, on display on Brighton beach.

Reviewing Boatman - the first 50, Alan Connor (The Guardian's crossword editor and the brains behind many of BBC2’s quiz programs) says: "This is one to savour. Boatman's puzzles are witty and ingenious. It is an extraordinary pleasure to read how his unique mind works. The first 50 is a book I never knew I needed in my life. Gift it to yourself and to the word-lovers in yours".

Hugh Stephenson (Alan’s predecessor at The Guardian) says: "This is a unique book of crosswords" and Henry Morris: "a Boatman crossword is like a theme park. Each daunting line is a rollercoaster ... He scares you witless. But you can't wait to do it all over again".Boatman - the second 50 contains another 50 puzzles from The Guardian, with five bonus puzzles previously only available online and including puzzles, solutions and the ideas and stories behind them, exemplified by this image of the book opened to show one of the stories, which is accompanied by a picture of a large cow.

Reviewing Boatman - the second 50, Gyles Brandreth says: "If you want a fiendish crossword, you want the best - which means you want Boatman, because he is the best" and Brian Bilston: "Cracking crosswords - each puzzle a delightful daily workout for the brain and a welcome tonic for the soul".
