Hi, I wanted to make a proper and more well-articulated post on the subject of the reception of my art, characters, and myself as the artist behind everything.
I'm stepping away for a little while.
As many of you probably know, I've been dealing with harassment, unwarranted and unasked for criticism, hate, and baseless accusations on my character due to the way I portray my trans male character, Mattias (Mat).
It's been several months (or maybe well over a year; keeping track of time is difficult for me especially now that I've been hearing and seeing these passing comments from folks who dislike my art, dislike how I depict Mat as a trans man in a relationship with a cis gay man, and just dislike me for being me.
But that's not the only overwhelming factor at play here. Between the highs and lows of people who tear down my art, there are folks on the opposite end of the spectrum who are so aggressively obsessed and in love my work. And while the complaint "you like my work too much," sounds like a ridiculous complaint to most other artists, it gets to a point where I feel like people view me as not human, untouchable, try to befriend me with ulterior motives, try to follow my partner just the same.
And it scares me—that kind of parasocial behavior for a guy who just draws pictures on your screen you enjoy.
I feel stuck, caught between these two extremities. Being either hated and cursed to hell, or held up high and treated as an idol. Treated as if my work exists to fulfill a personal purpose of the viewer, instead of my own feelings and thoughts being the reason my art exists in the first place.
I draw because I enjoy it. I draw because I want to see my story told. I draw because it's therapeutic. I draw because I always have, and always will.

I don't draw for anyone else but myself. Selfish and self-fulfilling purposes. Euphoria.
I mention the reason I draw because my art is primarily what people see from me. They don't see what happens beyond the screen on my end, nor do they need to. 1
You'd think that people would know that another human created the work they are tearing down, or realize a person with their own ideals drew the artwork they suddenly love so much that they force their love on the artist who created it. Realize that in the same way that an artist doesn't want unasked for criticism, that they also don't want unasked for flirting and people "coming onto" them.
It's strange.
Art used to be my escape from a chaotic household. Art was therapy. I told stories that in a way, are essentially me if boiled down to their base. Not directly, of course, but in an abstract way my stories are part of myself and my experiences. Who 1 am.
So to hear repeatedly that I am telling my own story wrong... it's heartbreaking.
Things like Mat's appearance are suddenly up for debate, when I never asked for this. He is stripped of everything that makes him himself to become fuel for an argument of "is this fetish work" I do not care to be a part of. I do not his body, which is the same as my own, to be a spectacle.
But it is. And it's a cycle.
A cycle of unwarranted hate and questioning, confusion about a trans person's actions; confusion about my own trans journey and my own choices from people who are supposed to be supportive and part of a community that thrives in diversity and throwing away expectations society forced on us. But, now it's being forced on my art, my trans characters, and me... for daring to be a real trans man who happens to look like him.

I enjoy drawing and sharing my work. Again, art and freedom of expression was an escape from my crazy upbringing. I still use my art as a way to hash out my emotions and feelings. Life is tough, especially in this day and age, but art has always been there for me.
So, to make this kind of art. Art that represents my frustration, sadness, my trans-ness, my love, loss, lust, fears—all my emotions and experiences—during a very tough time for me not only physically and mentally, but medically... and have it even be considered a topic of debate... it hurts.
My father got diagnosed with skin cancer earlier this year. I mentioned it once or twice in passing. I broke down at my job about it the day I found out. I don't have that job anymore after they took advantage of me and then ghosted me, forcing me to quit only a month ago. I also found out in that same timeframe that I'm disabled and have a chronic condition called Endometriosis that affects my ability to function.. often. There's many other things that have happened; I've faced loss upon loss and even feel like I am losing myself at times.
And when I drew, it brought me joy through all this. I could take time to step away from constantly hearing about not only my father going to the doctor every other day, but also myself doing the same. To escape the pressure from my mother to find another job, all while I am dealing with chronic pain, starting testosterone again and going through these hormonal changes and constantly trying to fight of existential crisis when the topic of wills, inheritance, insurance, how will I pay for medication, how will I get to a job let alone get a job itself, how can I take care of myself and those I love, and just how I can carry on living in a world that is so set on erasing me from existence.
So yes, art is an outlet. But I love it regardless of what it is.
And to be treated in these two extreme ways is exhausting. I can have the shittiest day of my life offline and hope that going onlin…

But lately 1 cannot have even that. My work is either scrutinized for how 1 portray Mat as a trans man, or it's held up as gospel and folks will white-knight for me if you think otherwise.
And I hate both of those things.
I don't need protection or people to throw themselves into battle for me. But I also don't need or deserve hate for every move 1 make.
You're allowed to dislike my art. Frankly, you're allowed to hate it. If you were forced to like my art, my work wouldn't be "art." Part of art being art is that the viewer does have feelings about it, and not the kind that are forced on them.
But, there's a difference between disliking my art and moving on (blocking, muting, scrolling away)... and coming up to me, sending me anonymous hate, sending my peers hate, and just making it very known as loudly as you can that you hate my work and you hate me.
If you have nothing nice to say, don't say it at all. And if you don't like my art or me, that's fine. Just keep your own peace by distancing yourself and let me have mine, please.
