Spooky bird stories. My Halloween comic from 2024.

A comic titled Spooky Bird Stories. In panel 1, a turkey vulture is telling stories to other vultures, and it says, "She walked toward the source of the terrible smell. She got closer and closer, and then, to her horror, she saw... No dead body." A black vulture says "No!" and a turkey vulture says "Did someone already eat it??" In panel 2, a northern cardinal is telling a story to some songbirds. It says "They peered through the windows of the house at the gory scene. Zombies had smashed through the door in the night. The homeowner was dead. But worst of all... He hadn't refilled the feeders." An eastern bluebird says "Aaah!" and an American goldfinch says "It can't be!". In panel 3, A screech owl is telling a story to other owls. It says "And then the ghost fluffed itself up really big to appear scarier." A saw-whet owl gasps, and a long-eared owl says "Horrifying!". In panel 4, a downy woodpecker is telling a story to other woodpeckers, and says "The eerie sound rang through the dark woods. Tap-tap. Tap-tap. It was the distinctive two-part knock of the Ivory-billed Woodpecker. The species had returned from the dead... FOR REVENGE." A red-cockaded woodpecker says "Yesss".

Humaning.

Saw this on the way in to work. I have no idea who made this, but a kei-class semi tickles the joy button. #weirdcarBS The truck it's on advertises cash for "unwanted vehicles," but I bet there's plenty of people here who would want this.

Tiny JDM-looking vehicle with a teal two-seater cab, and a flat bed in the back that looks like the ideal mounting point for a fifth wheel hitch. The bed and front bumper are covered with diamond step plate. Directly behind the cab are two vertical chrome exhaust stacks, one on each side of the "truck." The whole thing is riding on a normal flatbed truck, which has "cash paid for unwanted vehicles" written on the side of the frame.

The same vehicle as in the other picture, but the truck carrying it has moved forward a little, letting us better see the back end and four round taillights. The spare tire, mounted vertically on the back of the cab, is also visible.

I like how there's a gap of more than 1,800 *years* between the first two things that Wikipedia thought was noteworthy for last Tuesday. Like did people not want to put their Dacia Annexation Anniversary plans on hold for the next 18 centuries?

Screenshot of Wikipedia's "On this day" panel for August 11th. It shows that the Roman annexation of Dacia (part of modern Romania) happened in 106 -- and that nothing of significance happened for the next 1,846 *years,* until Jordan's King Talal abdicated his throne in 1952. (Also the East Timor Civil War started in 1975, but that's not important for the purposes of this post. I just didn't want to have the text cut off in the middle of the frame. Oh, and on the right is a picture of the entrance to the Mall of America, which opened on August 11 in the nineties and was a change of pace from the calamitous events of the day.)

More signs of the mainstreaming of #furry: NPR's hourly news summary discussed #Anthrcon 's 20th anniversary. The attendance was record-breaking, but so was the heat, leading to no fursuit parade or block party. They didn't even have to explain any of these terms; they just assumed you would know!
