I spend so much of my time at uni and even here trying to explain what I think, what I mean, and occasionally who I am. And then I call my dad, who understands approximately none of my current literary preoccupations but can somehow tell I’ve had a bad day before I’ve said a word. I miss that.

That makes sense developmentally. But I always appreciated the older kids who would talk to me or at least acknowledge my existence in HS. I thought it gave me credibility i didn’t believe I had otherwise, so I’m somewhat surprised by this “eww gross” mean-girl attitude.

FFS, it was obviously a joke. What fascinates me is how little empathy ppl seem to have for the kind of parental overwhelm that might inspire the sentiment. We’ve been outsourcing aspects of child-rearing to nannies, schools, etc. for centuries. Apparently the scandal is admitting you might want to.
