I should note that xenia also warned me against using Matrix, but sadly I can't seem to find her account on here anymore.

Oh yeah, OMEMO in XMPP, Megolm in Matrix, and the Signal ratchet encryption are all similar enough to be considered equivalent by layman. So security of XMPP seems to be overall superior to Matrix due to dramatically less server state, and far less distribution of metadata in federation.

I'm sure I'll hit some issues, but everything about this is simpler and lighter-weight. XMPP is basically junk that grew the features that were needed across a vibrant ecosystem. Matrix is overengineered by a centralized authority. It always seems like the later should be better, but it rarely is.

I had to run a bot on matrix to redact old messages. It did mean a centralized thing could control when messages disappeared. But XMPP MAM is the only server-side store AT ALL and it's configurable. The Conversations android app log deletion built in. No bot needed.

I've had mobile push notifications working properly off and on on matrix, but they broke maybe a month ago and after hours and hours I never did get them working again. With a good client and the right (totally standard) plugins, it just works on XMPP.

My only issue so far is that the xmpp crate (rust) doesn't have OMEMO support. That's not a killer for my use case, but it's saddening. Setting up prosody was easier than JUST mobile notifications on matrix. The code for my solar monitoring is far far simpler, written this morning

@mark.mastodon.fixermark.com.ap.brid.gy You were right. I'm fed up with matrix and looking into moving to XMPP. I just installed prosody. Thanks for pointing out the alternative. I'm embarrassed to say that I hadn't considered it until you posted about it.

BTW, DeWalt sucks. I'm stuck in the battery system, but if you're not don't start. I've posted this before, but reminder: www.worseonpurpose.com/p/your-power...

Based on a youtube video I found I added a ziptie for extra pressure, so hopefully the tube stays on the nipple now. DeWalt saws are known for leaking oil, they forgot to install the gasket on some models, so I'd just assumed it was that until I saw the dry chain.

My DeWalt chainsaw has been leaking oil all over the place, destroying my clothes. Then I noticed the chain was dry, so today I took it apart. There's no barb on the oil outlet nipple and the tube slid off. It was just filling the chainsaw body with oil . It's fixed now.

100% endorse this thread. I teach consent, violence prevention & bystander intervention for a living - It is my area of expertise. There is *no* evidence of the existence of an "Oops, my bad!" rapist. "Sexual assault is a miscommunication" is a myth without any evidence. It is an intentional act.

There's a really common one for computer geeks in "pythong". Your hands just want to finish that combination because it's so common, and all you have to do is stop but you can't.

Probably not. Rape of men is swept under the rug pretty regularly. Men who get raped aren't men and thus aren't worthy of protection by a lot of patriarchal logic.

Actually, I missed something else we've been doing to manage power. I've turned off our dehumidifiers for a few hours a couple of times now.

I'd have to go back and check sources, but I think the SLS isn't capable of the required launch cadence. The pipeline to build, test, and preflight them is only capable of something like one (maybe it was two?) a year as I recall.

mbrewer ↙↙↙ @smalladventures.net · 28/09/2026
If the batteries don't get a chance to hit 100% anyway (and thus waste power), it won't matter much when we do things during winter. Timing matters most when you're trying to avoid power being tossed away 'cause the batteries are full. So needing to manage should be seasonal.

mbrewer ↙↙↙ @smalladventures.net · 28/09/2026
That's rare though as it turns out, usually the sun peaks out at some point. We had to turn the grid on today, so I'm assuming that'll be an occasional thing this season. Then November through February the grid will probably need to stay on - due to our mini-split heating load.

mbrewer ↙↙↙ @smalladventures.net · 28/09/2026
The battery is 5120 Wh. We've been trying to run the dishwasher and washing machine during the day when the sun is out, but that's the extent of power management. In summer 2 densely-overcast days in a row starts to become an issue and we have to get careful. A 3'rd would mean grid power.

Private pilot here, but a piston engine pilot not a jet pilot. Yes "heat soaked" can mean the cabin got too hot for the plane AC to keep up; passengers have a pretty narrow comfort zone. But also "heat soaked" can mean the engines idled for too long other parts got too hot for take off...

Had to turn on grid power this morning for the first time since I turned my array on almost 3 months ago. It's rainy for the second day in a row and I messed up and ran the food dehydrator into the evening 2 days ago. The plan was always to remain on grid but it's worked better than anticipated.

Heh, I'm definitely referring to mainstream popified "country music" here, as in the bulk of what plays on country radio stations. Agreed that there are many awesome modern artists in and around country, folk, and bluegrass.

I hadn't realized he was on that recording. I'd have to do a deep dive on Willie Nelson to form an opinion. His discography and career are far too lengthy to damn him for one collaboration, but I find that really disturbing.

Somehow I lost a chunk out of the middle while reorganizing. Beer For My Horses celebrates lynching and makes me want to throw up every time I hear it. I also mentioned the Dixie Chicks getting beaten to a pulp by the genre, and attempts to create a new genre because Beyonce had a top hit.

I play Sweet Home Alabama on guitar (which slams Neil Young for bashing U.S. racism/etc). I'm not a purist. If they stop playing shit like Beer For My Horses I'll come back. Until then when I accidentally tune in I'll listen to a good artist, then almost without fail turn away on the next one.

Billy Cyrus toured with Nas X. Luke Combs made Tracy Chapman's Fast Car a top hit (and credited her). I'm not saying it's all bad or everyone in it is bad, but I could go listen to a genre where only maybe 1 in 10 or 20 songs is seriously problematic... so that's what I tend to do.

It's a genre ruled largely by white supremacists longing for a return to an antebellum south. I *like* the band "Lady Antebellum", but come ON. The wikipedia article spells it out en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lady_A. They were selling nostalgia for slavery and didn't even realize it. That's country music.

I used to listen to and enjoy modern country music, but stopped because the content of what's allowed to be popular has deep ties into an extremely problematic culture and I can't listen to it without thinking about that... Which sucks the joy out of it for me. www.rollingstone.com/music/music-...

I'm not positive it was the COVID shot, but if that was the cause I was down for about a week and backed out of multiple plans. It's a *good* one this year (in the sense that this is usually a sign it'll work).

I mean... I actually do think an axe is superior to a chainsaw for a number of tasks and sharpen it like a razor, to be clear. I've actually wondered about going back to XMPP with OTR. I'm using Matrix and I remain unimpressed. XMPP is kind of terrible, but everything else seems to be worse.
010
mbrewer ↙↙↙ @smalladventures.net · 26/09/2026
Seriously. People really underestimate how efficient an axe is because they just don't know how to sharpen one properly. If you sharpen it like a razor, rather than using a file, it's totally different. A chainsaw is only better in some instances. ^ this is totally what you meant right?

And to avoid this it's critical that we see the difference between these two sets of arguments. They are superficially similar, but on a second glance are pretty obviously not the same thing. You can believe this guy is honestly trying to warn us AND think the company PR is utter horseshit.

mbrewer ↙↙↙ @smalladventures.net · 25/09/2026
The Altmans and Zucks are sitting ready to twist the arguments of (eventually at least) well intentioned experts like this man for the purpose of convincing people AGI is coming (or maybe already here) for their own PR campaigns, and setting up the conditions necessary for regulatory capture.
100
mbrewer ↙↙↙ @smalladventures.net · 25/09/2026
This is pretty distinct from the Sam Altman and Zuck version of AI doomerism where AI is doing no harm at all right now and is just a tool and making people's lives better, but also has agency and is amazing, and ASI is a certainty and will kill us all. Note the inconsistencies inherent here.
100
mbrewer ↙↙↙ @smalladventures.net · 25/09/2026
Another clue is the language used. Note the lack of the phrasing we've seen from PR campaigns. There's no mention of "rogue" AIs, or other language that intentionally and falsely grants agency to these machines.

mbrewer ↙↙↙ @smalladventures.net · 25/09/2026
If we look at what he's saying, and we pair it with the better educated AI hater rhetoric, it's actually pretty similar. I say better educated because there's been a shift of late away from claims that AI "will never" do X... the arguments for which were always a bit bunk.
100
mbrewer ↙↙↙ @smalladventures.net · 25/09/2026
While this contains references to super-intelligence, I think it's useful to pick out the differences between this is and the rhetoric of AI doomerism from folks like Sam Altman. Of particular note is the recognition that AI is already doing harm in it's current form.

So I try to get excited by that opportunity, and not just depressed and frozen about the current reality... and in particular trying to focus on building a bridge from here to there that includes everyone. Bloody revolution is mostly a lot of people starving to death. It's a shitty way forward.

But AI has made plain a real shift in economics that has been coming for a long time - so as it happens I think it affords an opportunity as far as getting people to understand the need to fight oligarchy and build social safety nets and new real working systems... not just managed decline.

mbrewer ↙↙↙ @smalladventures.net · 25/09/2026
I'm an AI hater (at least as "AI" is now defined), and recently I'm liking the United Panther Party's platform of building a parallel system and then dismantling this one. There are folks serious about making a social safety net (Amanda Janoo seems to be), but they are a minority to be sure.
