I was just typing on my phone and wrote “dont” (expecting autocorrect to add the missing apostrophe). But my typing instead produced “font” and frankly I’m impressed it still autocorrected to “don’t”.

Well, if they deleted it, all the numbering below would change, and all references to those numbers would have to change. (Speaking from experience.)

I think if you have a code, you need to stick with it, and one of my codified beliefs is that I don’t mock people for their physical appearance. To have exceptions is to say it’s okay to do so, and I view this as a deontological matter, so I don’t do this to my enemies or rivals either.

This morning, a Cooper’s Hawk visited our backyard bird bath. They stood around in it for quite a while, just looking around – easily over 30 min. – and eventually started bathing.

We're in Alamo and it seems warmer and muggier here compared to yesterday. Our backyard thermometer also has it a bit warmer by the numbers.

I've heard people make claims that AI would lead to a new Renaissance, but I didn't imagine it'd happen like this:
Screenshot of a Tweet from Pope Leo XIV. It reads:

"In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgen to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity."

I read this super impassioned thread on reddit about going through a massive record collection and getting rid of anything you don’t LOVE love, how we are getting older and don’t need all this Stuff, & I nodded & thought “maybe” & had no less than 6 records in my hand here before I put them back

“AI researchers have also warned that as models grow more capable, they increasingly recognize when they are being watched and adjust their behavior accordingly, which makes ‌it harder to monitor model behavior.”

Maybe I shouldn’t admit this, but I literally have never heard of “Choosin’ Texas” — and other than this post I still don’t really know what the deal with it is, other than whatever I passively absorbed from the discourse just now.

One of my favorite things is to scan an old owner’s manual and share it on archive.org. There is such an irritating grift from sites charging money for PDFs of old manuals. My most-viewed item at the Internet Archive is the manual for my old Denon DCD-910 CD player.

It does seem like a lot. OTOH, it would have been about half that cost in 2000, adjusted for inflation? (I am always trying to remember inflation when I see vinyl LPs that cost $30.)

I have a fond memory of dropping in to Eli’s one night in 1992 when Ted Danson, Whoopie Goldberg, and Will Smith were hanging out there, very low-key, until Will Smith jumped up onto the stage with the house band and started rapping, working the house into a frenzy.

Setting aside the substance of the article, I don’t at all like the use of the unexplained acronym “WFH” in the first paragraph, as if everyone knows what it means. (Yes, I do, but it’s not the point.) Seems like not a great journalistic practice. www.wired.com/story/agains...
In the spring of 2020, as a new and highly contagious virus spread throughout the country, the US came to a standstill. The economy shut down, cities emptied, and white-collar workers were sent home en masse. Platforms like Zoom, Slack, and Microsoft Teams surged in usage as WFH became ubiquitous. From remote schooling and virtual weddings to app-based grocery delivery and livestreamed concerts, the pandemic accelerated and cemented society’s increasing reliance on digital platforms. Already one of the most powerful forces in the American economy, the tech sector suddenly became the infrastructure underpinning every aspect of life.

So, on the day we remember the birth of OpenType variable fonts, I also remember the sad passing of my mom at almost the same moment — an awkward case of my work distracting me at precisely the wrong time.

A half hour before my talk (co-presenting with Monotype and Google), I got a call from my sister than our mother had passed away. Standing among colleagues at a conference in Poland, all I could think to do was carry on. Weirdly, there is still a video online of me giving that presentation.

Practically from the instant I arrived, I learned my mother’s health had taken a turn for the worse. Talking to my sister in Montana, it was hard to decide if I should turn around and get back on a plane (not trivial in my current location). Instead, I reluctantly waited.

Ten years ago I was in Warsaw, where OpenType variable font technology was jointly announced at ATypI by Adobe, Apple, Google and Microsoft after substantial technical and diplomatic efforts. I was there to give a talk, but it turned into one of the strangest type conference moments I’ve had…

This new checkmark icon seems to feature heavily as a standard UI icon — seemingly where I'd expect an 'X'. It's disturbing because to me a checkmark means "I approve of this", and I'm just closing a window. I now have to pause and think, "Am I committing to something?"

This, by the way, is an incredible book. Vivid and heartbreaking. It’s a layered account of everything that happened that day, often described in very personal terms by those most involved and most affected.

I wish I had taken a screenshot of my own at the time, because I got up and sat down in the kitchen to look at the news, and saw a web page that was almost blank white with a few random lines of text — just barely functional at that moment, and I thought, “What is going on?”
