Software for the Command Module's Apollo Guidance Computer is in the folder "Comanche055" and code for the Lunar Module's AGC is in "Luminary099." Get in losers, we're going to the Moon. (5/n)

This is the last month to catch Carole A Feuerman's public art installation, "Monuments of Stillness," before it leaves Chicago. Here are 4 of the 10 sculptures scattered along the Mag Mile.
Color photo of Monumental Quan, an extremely realistic sculpture of a white woman in a pink swimsuit and gold swim cap perched atop a reflective fuchsia sphere. She balances on her hands and knees, her back slightly arched and legs bent upwards behind her. She faces the sphere, her eyes closed and expression tranquil in this busy downtown setting. Color photo of Bibi on the Ball, a life size bronze sculpture of a woman in a black two piece swimsuit sitting atop of a reflective sphere, her legs crossed at the knee and face tilted up towards the sun. Color photo of Justice, a life size bronze sculpture of a woman in a bikini and swim cap sitting in a meditative position atop a large sphere that reflects passersby and the streetscape. Color photo of The Golden Mean, a life size bronze sculpture of a male figure wearing a shiny gold swim cap. He balances on his hands, his body perfectly arching into the air in an elegant handstand.

The Apollo software (and hardware) is absolutely insane for its time and if you have any interest in computers or computer history you should read about it.

“The sewer gas does not come pouring into everyone’s homes in Philadelphia nor does it happen in Paris.” The single stack isn’t experimental or even radical. It’s in the homes of hundreds of millions of people worldwide and doesn’t result in failed traps, as the model codes in the US still suggest.

Look, we may not be getting housing, but at least we're not allowing a long-abandoned firehouse to be renovated into a brewpub, either. Take that, Logan Square!

Partner (doctor) has said she finds it useful for this too. The care team will brainstorm diagnoses, they will use AI to add one or two more options to the pile, and then the humans will devise a differential diagnosis plan.

I don't have a 100% electric home, but my power is out for an average of 1-2 hours per year. Being able to cook during those outages is not a huge priority.

Well sure, I can agree to that. I'm just saying that there's not much different between different cities (other than, as you say, maximum passenger flow). Either the gates work well or they don't.

Los Angeles when we build the train. Is there any good Ligurian surfing? If so, Turin or Marseille? Something in the Pyrenees?

Steven Lucy @slucy.bsky.social · 13h
Sure, but the OP article here is about NYC Subway, which I'm guessing exceeds any kind of peak passenger flow we see in Chicago.

Is there anything unique about any of these cities? It seems like either they work or they don't, not "will they work for *us*?"

The ones in NYC are supposed to recognize (with the cameras) a child going in front of an adult and let both through.

I'm guessing gender and/or racial politics because I don't see any performance or experience related reasons.

For a lot of temporary attention, raising your prices could be very bad long-term. People think of you as the expensive place and don't come back, when all the attention dies down. Might work if you have like a $10 "temporary James Beard fee" for 2 months.

Is it a HAWK? If so it turns solid yellow->solid red for a few seconds, then turns flashing red so cars may proceed (like a stop sign) during the 45 seconds or whatever that is required for the flashing hand (dependent on road width).

Latin America sometimes follows the BRT->metro capacity upgrade but I don't know how many other places do. Like in China when they build metro, are they replacing BRT lines? I don't think so.

I also shouldn’t have said “doesn’t help” people in wheelchairs, as I think boarding these “single step” cars is actually much more pleasant and faster for wheelchair users than boarding the gallery cars.

Doesn’t help people in wheelchairs but really helps people with other kinds of limited mobility issues, like canes, or people with strollers, bikes, or carts. And of course helps with dwell times.

Man gets on the bus rambling to no one and it just sounds like he's talking nonsense until he says, "it's 100 degrees and last night the president told Iran they could blow up San Diego!" The bus driver goes "hey now, he didn't say that" until the passenger pulled up the video clip

I have no idea, I’m just looking at the bus tracker. Would be amazing if someone with knowledge could shed some light. Blindly dispatching is not that much better than actively dispatching poorly. It’s 2026 we have radios and cell phones.
