Europe’s demand for minerals is driving deforestation far beyond its borders. A new study links EU mineral consumption to the clearing of 148,000 hectares of forest between 2001 and 2019. Around 85% of this impact occurred outside the EU. Learn more: buff.ly/TpWFTQK

Our findings show that significant environmental pressures remain embedded in global supply chains despite existing governance efforts. Despite many challenges, we suggest integrating mining into binding supply chain regulations. Read the paper here: doi.org/10.1016/j.re...

Variations across commodities, producer countries and consuming sectors highlight opportunities for intervention. For example, one quarter of the EU’s footprint was attributed to civil engineering construction, automotive manufacturing, and machinery and equipment production.

Of the 1.2 million hectares of mining-related tree cover loss traceable through supply chains, 12% were associated with EU consumption, placing the EU second after the US and ahead of China. Notably, 85% of the EU-related share occurred outside its territorial borders!

We estimate that, between 2001 and 2019, 1.5 million hectares of global tree cover loss were directly associated with the expansion of mining areas, with hotspots in South America, RUS, GHA and IDN, but also in CAN, the US and AUS. Largest shares can be attributed to the extraction of gold and coal.

New paper! 🎉 Mined resources are largely embodied in final demand far from extraction sites, with a disproportionately large share ending up in the Global North. Combining satellite imagery and MRIO modelling, we quantified the mining-related tree cover loss embodied in EU consumption. Key findings:

Politicians and industry call it “development” when they build a few hospitals, schools, or sports arenas. Real progress requires a fully fledged, long-term social programme, not just a handful of short-term projects.
