Everyone seems to be framing Trump's freeze on federal grants as a Constitutional fight over powers of the purse & whether presidents can disregard Congressional appropriations. It is that. But also at stake is the fundamental validity of government contracts! I see much less discussion on this... 🧵

I don't know if people who haven't worked in the public sector are aware that the category "things substantially funded by federal grant money" includes more or less everything

This matters. Not because I think Trump is capable of mercy or empathy towards these vulnerable groups. But because it is a public act of defiance. Contrast that with all these other powerful people in this country signaling nothing but appeasement and obedience.

Republicans are about to learn that governing is really fucking hard as @robinsonmeyer.bsky.social details in @heatmap.news on why they’ll regret both the death of permitting reform and the broader govt funding imbroglio. heatmap.news/politics/rep...

Republicans Will Regret Killing Permitting Reform
They might not be worried now, but Democrats made the same mistake earlier this year.

This is probably the most important story of year in the energy transition. ~600 gigawatts of new solar added to world grids today. That will produce ~1,000 terawatt-hours of clean electricity, or ~25% of all US electricity use or 2/3 of India's. In one year! Simply massive & it's accelerating. 🔌💡

+1. And backlogged interconnection queues fundamentally come down to a lack of T&D capacity. If we want a more reliable energy system, we simply need a lot more transmission!

Musk entered this year with the second- biggest fortune in the world, at $195 billion, behind Bernard Arnault at $233 billion. He is currently worth $454.5 billion, largely as a result of $TSLA going from $220/ share in mid- October to $466/ share today, based on... nothing.

It has been a BUSY week in permitting reform land. The good news: from industry to progressives to Trump, everyone agrees we gotta do something NOW. Good thing we have a bipartisan, bicameral negotiated bill ready to go! Today is the day for EPRA folks! Get those phones out and make some calls!

Hey 🔌💡 folks! Remember last year when the good folks at Grid Strategies crunched the numbers and found that load growth had nearly doubled, from ~0.5% to 0.9%? Remember the frenzied flurry of headlines in the NYT, WaPo, etc? Well uh… the 2024 update is in. CAGR is now up to 3.0% 😅

Few folks have as good a grasp on the energy system (and the politics & economics that underpin it) as John. We have ~2 weeks to make this happen. Leave it all out on the field!

I don't think you are thinking through the system impacts. Most grid failures of the past 4 years were due to over reliance on NG plants that didn't show up. Utility CEOs don't want to repeat that experience. Further, there isn't enough capacity on our existing NG grid for that much gas generation.

OPEC cuts oil demand forecasts for the 4th time this year. 2025 growth now expected at 1.54 million bpd, down from 1.64 million. The reason? Clean energy adoption in industry and transport is happening faster than expected. The transition is real. buff.ly/3CSjiU7

"Bluesky is awesome now, for how long?" I mean, look, all things change and end, we will all die, earth will be uninhabitable in a billion years, then the sun will expand and destroy the planet, and the universe will die a slow death of proton decay. But BEFORE THAT, let's make this place fun, okay?

From the newest Ezra Klein show. Astute analysis of the outsized power single issue groups have in Democratic policymaking. We cannot let perfect be the enemy of good just because a non profit needs to keep pushing the boundaries of what’s “acceptable” to maintain relevance.

Media coverage of Gaetz/Gabbard/Hegseth noms has been pathetic. Stop guessing for hidden strategies. Trump said he wants to blow up the govt, especially security agencies, and prosecute/deploy troops against his domestic enemies. These are the people who will do that.
