S.L.James @sljames.bsky.social · 19/12/2023This is terrific, Carlos. Veyne was remarkable. Without his elegy book, there is no SLJ on elegy. He blew so many wrong presumptions away and thereby made so much of my own work not merely easier but possible. I disagree w/him here & there, but could not have proceeded without him. 110
S.L.James @sljames.bsky.social · 17/12/20232/…South Road, I think to myself, “this is Bill McCoy’s doing—good for him.” I avoid Manning Road in general, but I think the same thing whenever I’m there. It was an example of real leadership, and I think it meant a great deal to the researcher’s family. (I hope.) 000
S.L.James @sljames.bsky.social · 17/12/2023That’s good to hear, actually. And I’ll never forget his response when a dentistry researcher was fatally run over while legally crossing Manning Drive. McCoy was furious. He ordered solutions at every crosswalk on south campus. They went into place instantly. Every time I’m stuck in traffic on..1/ 100

And, for everyone's sake, mask up at the airport, on the plane, at the winter concerts, and on public transit through the New Year! 0138
S.L.James @sljames.bsky.social · 15/12/2023It was my 1st semester on the faculty, & I haven’t forgotten. When he started his 1 term as governor, Pat McCrony—oops, I mean McCrory—began saying that UNC needed to produce worker bees. He said “gender studies classes can get butts in seats, but can those butts get jobs?” I fear more of that, too. 100
S.L.James @sljames.bsky.social · 15/12/2023McCoy was better than people had expected, but he publicly called himself the “interim CEO” of the campus & he asked the dean of the College why they didn’t cut Classics (&, I presume, other small departments). She explained, but I fear a repeat episode. Jim White will defend us, I’m sure, but…. 110

S.L.James @sljames.bsky.social · 15/12/2023What fun, Andrew. I know people who had to sleep at various airports. And the bomb cyclone at Boston the next year was a stunner, too. 010

S.L.James @sljames.bsky.social · 15/12/2023You were very nice to host them. People were so panicked. 100
S.L.James @sljames.bsky.social · 15/12/2023I remember! I had early boarding, so I told people I was saving two seats for my daughters—you and Jessica. Then I made her practice for her PhD exams all the way back to RDU. You helped, as I recall. Ted and Serena were also on that flight, I think. 010
S.L.James @sljames.bsky.social · 15/12/2023You’ll know when the time comes. I can’t hear Jones’s name w/o seeing all those children & their teachers, & thinking of what he put their families through. Giving up important news updates, but I cannot share air space with that man. Lots of other reasons to quit Xitter, though. Yours will come. 220
S.L.James @sljames.bsky.social · 15/12/2023This is what did it for me. I was inactive on Xitter for the lat few weeks, but the return of Alex Jones was, and is, intolerable. I felt such relief when I closed down my account. 1254
S.L.James @sljames.bsky.social · 15/12/2023I will never forget. Everybody was told they were stuck for five days. The panic! I was lucky: my flight (yay Southwest) wasn’t canceled—& had extra seats. I told about 5 of my grad students to switch to it, & they did. We got home, holding our breath during the ascent to cruising altitude. Whew. 460

I just did a “training” for evaluation of grad applications, in the wake of the affirmative action ban. 35 minutes of what felt like a wink-nod. Really, students are the ones who need training for writing statements that let us read them in context. 292
S.L.James @sljames.bsky.social · 12/12/2023It really does cut down on the emails, but some of them come through anyway. This one even mentioned the FERPA law—and then proceeded to start asking me questions. I delayed writing back, and got a second email the next day. 010
S.L.James @sljames.bsky.social · 12/12/2023You are singing my song. I even sent the class an email explaining that federal law prohibits discussion of grades by insecure media, such as email & Zoom, and I’m still getting complaints—about an A-. 110
