In theory, if someone had a work pension of just £2.24 a week it would appear to all go in tax, but in fact be 2p on work and £2.22 on state, overall less than 1% tax.

Work pension is not taxed 'harder' than state, but can look like it because all the allowance is applied to the state pension first, then the other pays all the tax. So in you bank account it can look like the state increase is generous and work one pitiful, because it carries all the tax.

In the clip with Rachel Reeves, the questioner's father is 85, so so on the "old" state pension - so if that is his only income, way inside the tax allowance. (will be £9,989, according to BBC)

I went 10 years not addressing my in-laws by name at all, as it felt impertinent to use first names, but odd to say 'Mr' or 'Mrs'. Then the day my first son was born I telephoned from the hospital and said "Hello Eddie, is Gwen there?" - Suddenly it was alright.

Surely it doesn't need to be said that if someone is working exclusively for one company, the only reason they are "self-employed" is for the company to evade tax / NI / pension contributions / employment law. True the worker is complicit, but they have 'Hobson' s choice': take it or no job.

I remember that; going on holiday from Southend airport to drive down through France. The pilots were all ex-RAF chaps, very laid-back; "Everyone ready? off we go then" and passengers and crew would saunter across the tarmac and settle in. Nearly my dad's car as well, but that's a mark 10, his mk 2.

I love these! Aren't the children walking on the wrong side of the lane? The highway code said you should walk on the right to face oncoming traffic.

"Tonight you're mine completely You give your love so sweetly Tonight the light of love is in your eyes But will you love me tomorrow?" It still blows my mind that this powerful insight into the life of teenage girls, throughout history, was written by a guy - the wonderful Gerry Goffin.

The article only compares against S&P 500, which did less well than others. If split between S&P, FTSE100 and Dev Europe funds it would have made about 24%.

Wasn't it also to do with Antarctica being 'carved up' in segments matching the countries facing it, which Argentina doesn't because a little bit of Chile curls round, but Falklands and South Georgia do.

Yeah I heard that, and came searching on here absolutely fuming; if Trump thinks he can appropriate Vonnegut, who would absolutely oppose everything Trump represents... So if Trump did not say "So it goes" , how did BBC come to report it? #BBCWATO

Sorry I missed this post yesterday, but I must put in a belated vote for Alan Johnson. Good example of one from 'the lower end of the food chain', but a fabulous read, and deservedly sold very well, as I remember.

Why should the allowance be so high? The Libs in coalition pushed the increase, it was about 10k in today's money before 2010. Large allowance = anomalies, eg taxpayer is better off dying in Sept than March/April. And you can start a 25K job in Oct and pay no tax for 6 months

I wonder which brand of shoe they were subliminally advertising... Seriously; you were made to feel guilty, as a parent, if you didn't have your kids measured on that device and buy Clarkes shoes. Even in tough times, not doing so was as irresponsible as not taking them to the dentist or optician.

Indeed, when I married and filled in a tax return it was my role as 'man of the house' to enter my wife's earnings, and savings, which applied even if she earned most of the money. The was no obligation on me to show her what I earned or had invested.

I remember giving a lift to miss Stoneman, a lively lady in her 70s from the flat below my GF. She wanted to be in Europe to reduce the risk of wars, 'so others don't lose out like me'. She was 'a maiden lady', one of thousands left over by the slaughter of 14/18.

I also loved Upright. Beautiful in that you *thought* you knew what the story would be in the first 5 minutes, but it opened up in ways you didn't expect, and from the inside of a piano to vast open spaces. Then having Missy Higgins sing the song that tied it together at the end, how cool was that?

You're right, it did come out first. For historians reading this in a hundred years, I think you've a slip of the brain/finger there, it was a 'ten bob bit', being half a quid. And I've since remembered, the sixpence coin was also a 'sixpenny bit' in polite language, 'tanner' was slang.

Gerard Cutler @sliderule.bsky.social · 01/02/2025
In fact, new coins are known by their denomination: 5p, 10p etc. The old coins had their own names: Fathing, florin, half-crown, thruppenny bit (why was the 3d coin alone called a 'bit'?)

Gerard Cutler @sliderule.bsky.social · 01/02/2025
The half new pennies were called 'tiddlers'. Other new coins don't seem to have picked up nicknames like the old coins: 'bob', and 'tanner'.

Good ol’ St Luke. My grandmother called this time “Luke’s little summer”, the mild weather in autumn when you put the garden to bed. She was a Victorian countrywoman, when saints’ days dictated sowing and harvesting. People then were as intelligent as us and knew as much, just different things.

Just up the road is the Science Museum, which Dad visited frequently and where gained his interest in the new technology of radio. They now exhibit wireless sets by the company he worked for in the 1930s, there’s a good chance he made at least a part of this.

Went to see where my father was brought up in Kensington, a hundred years ago. Grandpa was a chauffeur, trained at Rolls-Royce before WWI. They lived in a flat over the garage, former stables, in the mews. Nan was a kitchen-maid. I’d love to tell her her old home is now worth over 2 million pounds.
