As a "game programmer artist" I can say from firsthand experience that this chart is stupid and dumb in its assumptions about skill level. If I didn't have our level designers telling me where to put things all the environments I made would have been total garbage.

My debugging system is only flagging some of the noise spots as not being hit by the ray from the light. Fascinating. Now the question becomes whether my raycasting logic is wrong, or if my debugging system is wrong.

After learning a lot of things about vector math, my vertex light baking system now takes light angle into account for smoother shadows! Next step: figuring out what's up with all that noise you can see jittering around inside the light's sphere of influence.

What if I put triggers on lights close to the navmesh that re-enable their realtime light source when an entity hits the trigger? 🤔

Realtime lighting getting baked into vertex colors in Unity! The terrain shader uses the vertices' alpha channel as emission and tapers the edges with the material's normal maps. Might make this a free asset package when I buff out some rough edges to the logic and when I make it more user-friendly.

Just a PSA for all the other major publishers: You can’t make a GTA 6. Don’t have any meetings about it. Don’t put together any pitch decks. Don’t preemptively doom your workforce and the industry any further than you already have. Leave it alone.

I used to be confused watching Americans refuse to stick up for themselves or even allow OTHERS to advocate for things like workers rights (because doing so is Woke Commie Shit America Perfect Fuck You), but it clicked when I found out they make you pledge allegiance to the flag every day as a kid.

Deleted my original follow-up for sounding "harsh" but on further thought, nvm, I'm sticking to it. The level of disrespect and un-professionalism to tell your devs "yeah ur good" for an entire year and then to switch to "oop yep you're done" is so outrageously shitty I genuinely just have no words.

Just to be clear on this article, the position I took isn't "developers need to be more brave" but "funding needs to be more brave". Developers make all the cool stuff, just because they want to - the funding side hits it with market research and fear and growth targets and shareholders.

That said: Asha Sharma IS currently playing a bullshit PR game where she’s really just saying hollow things people want to hear in order to attempt to rebrand, so it’s possible they will hold onto discs for a while solely for that? But I doubt it, and if they do it won’t last long.

It was really funny when they dropped the price of Gamepass and people started enthusiastically declaring she had saved Xbox And then it was immediately back to our regularly-scheduled war on the games industry and the livelihoods of everyone in it But hey at least gamepass is a few bucks cheaper

In my opinion, any CEO that deems it necessary to lay off this many people is admitting that they so woefully mismanaged their company and caused harm to their workforce. I think that warrants jail time, and I'm not remotely joking.

I want to re-emphasize one part of this Xbox story: Half of the 3,200 cuts are happening today and half are happening in the next 12 months. In other words, even people who survived today's layoffs will have to spend the coming year wondering if they're going to be next.

I'm happy to announce to game developers worldwide that almost every single one of us can now officially claim that at least one of our games did better numbers than the "Great American State Fair", and also that we did better at not shipping greybox assets for our setpieces.
That fair is empty.

With the shutting down of Concord and EOL for Destiny & the complete gutting of live-service stalwart Bungie, Sony announces a new company strategy focused on -wait sorry let me re-read I must've gotten it wrong... no that's what it says- yeah they're still trying to build a new not-Destiny y'all
In the PlayStation 5 generation, Sony Computer Entertainment's software output hasn't been as impressive as it was in the previous console generation. Due to SIE’s aggressive live service push, the Japanese publisher released several games - such as the ill-fated Concord from Firewalk Studios and Marathon from Bungie - that did not meet players' expectations. Despite this, President Hideaki Nishino confirmed they will continue to pursue live-service games, even as he heavily hints at a PlayStation 6 handheld designed to meet the changing playstyles of gamers worldwide.

"We believe that live service games are content that attracts users on a global level, so we want to continue to revitalize the market through both first-party and third-party content," Hideaki Nishino said in a new interview with Famitsu celebrating the magazine's 40th anniversary. "We are not only focusing on promoting new releases, but also considering what we can do with older titles in the medium to long term. Also, this year we are planning to release our own live service title, MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls, and we hope everyone will enjoy it."

Related: that take from Kojima that he was happy about "going indie" after Konami fired him has always irked me. Getting fired cause you can't meet deadlines and STILL being allowed to hijack awards shows and get all your projects instantly funded no matter how goofy they are is NOT "going indie."
