"Pound for pound" implies Americans are per capita more evil than al Qaeda and I'm going to go out on a limb and say I don't think the average American is worse than the average member of al-Qaeda. (of course he's just misusing the phrase because he thinks it sounds smart)

Woe be it from this recovering opinion writer to bemoan another opinion writer pivoting to hard news reporting, but Douthat going from the opinion pages to 60 Minutes is like Gilderoy Lockhart being asked to teach Defence Against the Dark Arts - you think you're up to it, but you're clearly not

The Odyssey was pretty great, lads, but not as great as i wanted it to be. Nolan made it a moral tale, which is a hilarious choice for a world where fate, not human choice, governs action on earth. But i do understand why he wants to moralize at this moment in history.

This is a blatantly unconstitutional threat. The executive branch has zero constitutional power to tell states how to run their elections - zero. Nor does DHS have the constitutional power to threaten state and local officials with jail time if they fail to abide by the executive branch’s demands.

There is no way that "278,000 noncitizens" are voting in US elections, as Trump claims in his speech. Its just not physically possible, as WIRED and other outlets have consistently reported. This is a scare tactic, and it's working. And the repercussions are endless:

stuff like this is why one important avenue for court reform is just nixing the shadow docket altogether and forcing these people to explain themselves to the public when they issue orders. also, making their records property of the united states and subject to publication when they leave the bench.

Commentary: Defining American Character for 250 Years
In 1890 the Census Bureau had found the American West so densely populated that the frontier effectively vanished. No more was there a place so far removed from civilization as to be untamed wilderness. America, the Census Bureau declared, was settled. The historian Frederick Jackson Turner lamented this development three years later in his famous Frontier Thesis. “American social development has been continually beginning over again on the frontier,” he wrote.

It is difficult to read the Supreme Court's opinions over the last week and not see the general trend toward accretion of Court power. Interpretive philosophies like originalism give way to "plain text" readings (by judges) and historical "standards," without any specific guidelines. /1
