A blunt, turnip-headed wooden arrow (kabura-ya) rests aligned with his steady gaze, held at full draw as horse and rider thunder down the course. The contrast between the muscular power of the white horse, the crisp geometric line of the drawn string, and the fluttering patterned sleeves creates a high-stakes sensory moment: the thundering beat of hooves, the rushing wind, and the held breath before the release.
abusame (流鏑馬) is an ancient Japanese ritual of mounted archery dating back to the late Heian and early Kamakura periods (12th century), codified under Shogun Minamoto no Yoritomo to cultivate samurai discipline, mental focus, and spiritual devotion. Performed as a sacred rite at Shinto shrines, the archer must shoot three wooden targets in rapid succession while galloping down a narrow, two-hundred-meter track. The arrow's bulbous wooden tip—known as a whistle-arrow—produces a high-pitched hum as it cuts through the air, signaling a prayer for peace and driving away evil spirits. The creation of the archer's specialized gear, from the laminated bamboo bow and eagle-feather arrows to hand-woven silk brocades and custom leatherwork, represents a living continuum of monozukuri (artisanal mastery and material craft), where feudal military tradition is preserved as sacred performance art.
