Simply way too soon to write this article. For all we know right now, he could disappear forever or just keep uploading videos monthly like nothing happened. A statement from the victim could be posted tomorrow or never. There could be 0 or 20 other victims currently working up the courage to speak.

There were shortcomings for sure. He couldve simply not cultivated a huge paid discord centered around his personality, given this would inevitably explode one day. There were still ethical failures, I think. Was there a way to maintain such a platform ethically with this secret? I guess idk either.

A lot of the most poignant feelings of betrayal here do come from some of the particular choices he made with his platform. Like agreeing to consult on the Silent Hill 2 remake, a game in part about sexual assault, without disclosing his history.

I dont exactly agree that he isnt notably talented, but yes there is an opportunity for people who mostly just watched him to learn how many other great voices are out there. I hope thats what happens instead of a lot of people checking out of the field entirely.

There are other video essay writers who inspire me similarly (ncg, lily alexandre, transparency) but it's a novel and disgusting experience to see a pillar of my internal creative world revealed as infested with termites. But youre right: it's nothing that cant be rebuilt better

It's just difficult cause he was one of a single-digit number of creators whose work I really held as a gold standard, that I would regularly study and refer back to. I would regularly think "what would jacob do here" when writing or editing. He was a recurring part of my creative process
