My automatic coffee maker's boiler just exploded, leaving my kitchen countertop and floor covered in soggy espresso remnants and setting off my smoke alarm. Somehow I'm more upset about this than my car being stolen last month
A cropped photo of the cover of the Daily Express from 23rd May 2019, showing a photo of then-prime minister Theresa May emblazoned with the headline "How much more can she take?" This was following the resignation of Commons leader Andrea Leadsom, following a growing backlash against May's Brexit plan from MPs within her own party. Theresa May announced her own resignation the following day, serving as a caretaker prime minister until the appointment of Boris Johnson on 24th July 2019.

Zoomers in the pub are in genuine disbelief that millennials could have watched the breaking news of 9/11 live, because it happened in the middle of a school day (1.46pm GMT) and we didn't have smartphones in 2001

The poll tax riots. I was too young to understand the economics of the Community Charge ("poll tax") and why this contributed to Thatcher's downfall, but the BBC News footage of the subsequent rioting in London's Trafalgar Square was unmissable

I love the way FIP Radio responds to the death of a beloved icon by somehow assembling a loving and slightly eclectic retrospective of the artist's work in time for broadcast the following evening, and Dolly Parton is no exception 💔 www.radiofrance.fr/fip/podcasts...

Even though it's entirely painted in acrylic, with the photorealistic splash captured on a square canvas, I've always loved the way David Hockey's "A Bigger Splash" looks a lot like a Polaroid photo of a suburban LA poolside, the air thick with heat, the calm only briefly broken by an unseen diver
David Hockey's "A Bigger Splash" (1967). In the background is a mid-century modern bungalow with warm pink and orange rendering and tall glass windows reflecting the empty skyline but completely masking whatever is inside, alongside two tall and spindly yet perfectly vertical palm trees, all against a bright and clear blue sky. Dominating the foreground is a swimming pool, a wide expanse of turquoise blue that takes up the entire lower section of the painting. In the lower-right corner, a bright sun-yellow diving board overhangs the swimming pool diagonally at a sharp angle, drawing your attention directly towards the center of the pool. The bright colours of the sky and the bungalow suggest an intense summer heat.

Where the diving board ends, this perfectly neat, geometric, silent and motionless world is disrupted by a chaotic, jagged burst of bright white and light blue water exploding out of the calm turquoise water; it is the only part of the painting that is not painted in flat, smooth blocks.

The painting shows a snapshot of luxury life in suburban Southern California, one that is utterly still, empty, and beautifully lonely. There are no people visible, but the splash is a brief flash of human life in this frozen stillness.

While the splash is meant to capture the moment immediately after someone has dived into the water, the splash itself took Hockey two weeks to paint with tiny brushes; conversely the rest of the painting was mostly applied with a roller and took just a couple of days to complete. Hockney himself loved to point out this irony: "I loved the idea of painting this thing that lasts for two seconds; it takes me two weeks to paint this event". He also had no idea who the diver was; this was an enlargement of two of his prior paintings, themselves composed from reference photos from a pool building manual, with the bungalow based upon then-modern architecture he'd seen around Los Angeles

Screenshot from Duolingo, asking to translate the sentence "We don't need a closet" into German ("Wir brauchen keinen Schrank").

This is presumably intended to mean a literal closet, as the German terms for being in the closet are "ungeoutet" ("un-outed") / "nicht geoutet" ("not outed"), although some millennials and zoomers use the Denglisch "im Closet sein"
