PhD candidate at jagannathanlab.com @ETHZurich studying satellite DNA barcodes' role in #Meiosis by breaking up happy chromosome couples 💔. 'Squashing brains, collecting virgins & washing testes' are phrases I regularly use #Drosophila 🏳️‍🌈 🐈 🍕

An exciting update to a preprint from our lab! Barcode-like satellite DNA repeats enable homology detection in meiosis. Led by the fantastic @skrutlnize.bsky.social. (MJ) www.biorxiv.org/cgi/content/...

Meiotic pairing through barcode-like satellite DNA repeats
During meiosis, chromosomes must find, pair, and synapse with their homologous partners in the crowded milieu of the nucleus (1). Although homology detection is generally attributed to recombination, ...

The fact of the matter is that Black, Indigenous, Latino/a, LGBTQ+, and other minorities groups in the US have worse health than white, cis, heterosexual people. Not studying the problem won't make the difference go away. Studying how and why it happens and making policies based on facts will. /fin

Conservatives have pushed hard the idea that there is science corruption-- because they want to destroy science and universities. There are some problems with some scientists. But the science system is still great. Letting conservative elites tear it down to enrich billionaires wld be a disaster.

If you have been affected by the fires in LA, or are concerned about your ability to keep precious Drosophila strains going during the latest funding crisis, we will host your strains as a backup. Please email me. Please amplify. If you are also able to host fly strains, add your name as well.

Loss of D1 during embryogenesis triggers transposon expression in adult ovaries. Top: Ovaries from the indicated genotypes (D1 and aubergine mutants and heterozygotes, F1 and F2) were stained with Vasa (green) and DAPI (magenta). Bottom: RNA in situ hybridization against Copia (green) and total polyadenylated mRNA (blue) was performed in ovaries of the indicated genotypes that were also stained for DAPI (magenta). Yellow and black arrowheads indicate undifferentiated germ cells in the aubergine mutant germarium.

Also super happy to share our #Meiosis preprint! We show that satDNA mismatches disrupt meiotic pairing, especially at centromeres, leading to oocyte death. This highlights the critical role of satDNA in maintaining meiotic stability 👉 researchsquare.com/article/rs-5538025/v1 ! Jagannathanlab.com

Thrilled to share our paper is out in @plosbiology.org! 🎉 We explore how satellite DNA organization is linked to transposon repression. A huge thanks to my amazing co-first author Ankita Chavan and all the collaborators who made this possible! 💕 jagannathanlab.com #Proteomics Check it out here 👇👇

Multi-tissue characterization of the constitutive heterochromatin proteome in Drosophila identifies a link between satellite DNA organization and transposon repression
Pericentromeric heterochromatin clusters into nuclear foci known as chromocenters, the proteome of which remains largely unknown. This study uses quantitative mass spectrometry to characterize the chr...
