Quick work-related thread vaguely pertaining to my health: Please, if you can, defend your work-life balance and agency to say "enough" or "I need more time". Years into the future you won't be wishing you'd stayed up later to get more work done or answered more outside-work-hours emails/calls -

YES, that is peak bird character design. All of my furry bird OCs have human-like hands and wings on their backs, mostly because I never learned how to draw big wing hands. But the great thing about being an artist is that I can learn how to turn normal hands into big ass wing hands!!

CW: dead bird It snowed for the first time this season on the first of the month. I went out hunting with a friend and saw/obtained my first wild Rock Ptarmigan. I used the whole animal, preserving it as a specimen for my work and research after grilling it for dinner. It was tasty. 🍗

The office camping set up: sleeping bag on top of a mattress pad. It is surprisingly comfortable. My main complaint is that since I’m on the second floor of the building, I can hear and feel everything moving on the same floor outside my door. It’s weird having to be vigilant when trying to sleep.

Last night I camped overnight in my grad student office working late on assignments. I was fueled by a box of 50 breaded chicken wings and mango habanero sauce. They were so delicious. Regret has not set in yet

I had a great time hosting some friends tonight for a paint and sip night. Nobody was brave enough to try and follow an episode of Bob Ross except me. My painting is the one with the ptarmigan. :> I am glad I was able to overcome my depression and join in on the event I worked so hard to host.

I’ve always seen memes about people eating olives straight from the jar and I’ve never related to them. Well, I bought this jar of grilled olives from Costco and they’re so freaking good. I’m in my bed eating these olives straight outta the jar like a gremlin. I get it now.

Have you ever tried to read a scientific journal article and been told “you don’t have access, pay to download this article?” Did you know that the author of that article gets $0 if you pay? Instead, you can email the author and ask for a free copy! I’d be delighted to help and answer questions!

A little watercolor painting I did as a gift to a friend. Her sona is a kangaroo who is smores-themed. She is made out of chocolate, graham cracker, and marshmallow. 🦘🍫 #furry #traditionalart
A watercolor painting, about 3 x 3 inches in size, of my friend’s fursona. The character is an anthro kangaroo with a body made of graham cracker, ears tipped with chocolate, and curly hair made of marshmallow. The kangaroo is smiling at the viewer sweetly.
The same painting in the first image, but on a different background, highlighting different colors in the piece.

In the meantime, here are some recent ways I’ve contributed casually to science: - I left a Google review of a state park. - I saw a cool moth and posted it to iNaturalist for an ID. - I saw a blurry bird, identified it w/ iNaturalist, verified its calls w/ Merlin, then posted a sighting to eBird.

Yes. Stay tuned. I will try to figure out how I can reward your time worn doing community service by making some cute and fun art of your fursona/OCs. This is what I wanted to do for the last 10+ years. I’m gonna do it now, while overwhelmed with grad school responsibilities. Genius, Skoryx.
110
Skoryx @skoryx.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
I will likely have a Google Form set up where people can request custom art from me in exchange for some time and effort spent doing a citizen science activity, and then a Trello to track everything: the activities I’ve inspired people to do and the art I’ve done in exchange. I’m so excited…
110
Skoryx @skoryx.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
Okay. I think I’m gonna take the leap. I think I’m gonna start a new project! It will be a large art project started as an initiative to encourage citizen science, contribute to education, and most importantly, contribute to the arts, and foster connection within the online art/furry community.
120
Skoryx @skoryx.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
I think I want to start an initiative like that again, but I’m pretty behind with doing art and homework and IRL responsibilities. Maybe I can make it one of those projects that will span multiple years instead of a short period of time. … I am procrastinating and I am not sorry. Yet, anyway.
120
Skoryx @skoryx.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
I’ve had initiatives in the past where I’ve given people free art and drawn art requests in exchange for a community service activity. Like, if you spent an hour picking up trash around your neighborhood and sent me a picture or a summary of it, then I’d draw you a chibi or pixel art for free.

I think that leaving Google Reviews warning about crappy hotels, dangerous restaurants, and problematic businesses is the modern-day equivalent of being in a primitive society where we have to keep a record of which berry or mushroom made my friend ill upon ingestion.
100
Skoryx @skoryx.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
Google Reviews I purposely post under a pseudonym instead of my real name because I actually *do* want some anonymity in that realm. But yeah, I am also dedicated to improving society by posting pictures of updated restaurant menus and warning people of places and things to watch out for.
110
Skoryx @skoryx.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
I am very passionate about getting involved in citizen science and encouraging others to do so. Even doing something as mundane as posting a Google Review about your local nature preserve or a nearby park can contribute to science and education. More importantly, it helps ppl like you and me.

eBird: ebird.org/home Merlin Bird ID: www.merlinbirds.org Merlin Bird ID is absolutely amazing. And free! You can access a list of what birds are in your area and a library of pictures and calls. It also does IDs just like iNaturalist, only for birds, from photos or audio. IT’S LIKE A BIRD SHAZAM
ebird.org
eBird - Discover a new world of birding...
eBird transforms your bird sightings into science and conservation. Plan trips, find birds, track your lists, explore range maps and bird migration—all free.

Skoryx @skoryx.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
It’s important to know that eBird has to be used with a field guide or an App like Merlin Bird ID, because eBird only does half of what a Pokédex does. Birds provides you the ability to track what birds you’ve seen, but doesn’t provide info about them. The Pokédex entires will be outside of eBird.

Do you like Pokémon? Then you will probably like eBird! It’s just like catching and learning about Pokémon and filling out a Pokédex. Except the Pokédex is a bird Life List and wading in the grass will be for detecting the presence of birds instead of catching Pokemon, + you can share your catch!

Website: www.inaturalist.org I highly recommend you sign up for a free account and then and snap a picture of a species (e.g. plant or animal) you see all the time but have no idea what their common or scientific name is. You’ll get an ID! This is my profile: www.inaturalist.org/people/killd...

iNaturalist
iNaturalist is a social network for naturalists! Record your observations of plants and animals, share them with friends and researchers, and learn about the natural world.

Skoryx @skoryx.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
iNaturalist is a free website/app where you can upload a picture of an unknown organism, and people who are identification WIZARDS (both as academics and hobbyists) will help identify your mystery critter. So, not only do you learn about your critter sighting, but it provides so much valuable info!

How, you may ask? My favorite apps/websites for contributing to the scientific community in a casual way are iNaturalist and eBird. Ranking them by favorites, it’s 1. iNaturalist 2. eBird And Google Reviews counts as a third. Yes, even Google Reviews contribute to science and education, actually.

You can’t fix climate change. I’m not asking you to do that. But you CAN actively contribute to science by helping scientists write new research about climate change’s effects, helping to document biodiversity, and helping your local community understand and appreciate what’s in their backyard.

I want to help people as much as I can during my time on this planet. I’m not interested in helping like healthcare workers do. My contribution to society will be in the form of science and education. You don’t have to be a highly accomplished scientist to contribute. You can be a citizen scientist!
