Pushback is growing on the University of Alaska Fairbanks campus to the UA leadership’s decision to remove all references to DEI from websites, publications, job titles, offices and programs. The student newspaper is covering it: www.uafsunstar.com/news/regents...

Devastating & predictable after last week’s BOR motion. @inspiringgirls-ak.bsky.social took a few trainings from NDAC over the years that positively impacted our teaching & facilitation on our expeditions. Did anyone archive their pages? Would love to help make sure the resources remain accessible.
A screenshot of a Facebook post from Ronnie Houchin that reads “The Nanook Diversity and Action center seems to be no more. The former url (www.uaf.edu/ndac) redirects to the Wood Center’s homepage. I saw this coming a year ago when my “leadership” began telling me that NDAC did too much for queer students and that NDAC made straight, white, Christian men feel unwelcome. It’s so sad to see a program that I helped build, and that made a difference in so many students’ lives, just suddenly…disappear.”

It violates not only the U.S. Constitution, but also the Alaska State Constitution and their own bylaws. Yet, they can say “we support academic freedom, but don’t ever use these three words.” Banning words is anti-intellectual and a trait of fascism.

Thank you for posting this thread. I’m in the middle of a push to raise $ at UAF to replace federal funding that was cut from the program I work for because we’re focused on diversity and inclusion. Pointing out the $ aspect is a good idea (unfortunate that $ is what they care about)

Incredibly disappointing response from the University of Alaska. No university support for diversity, for equity, for inclusion is allowed. Just disgraceful for the board of regents of an institution of higher education to make this choice. (posted twice for complete alt text) #alaskasky

We've received an enormous outpouring of support in the past few weeks, and we're now over halfway to our goal! 3/
A water bottle graphic with the Inspiring Girls Expeditions Alaska logo represents the progress of the fundraising campaign to run the program's expeditions this summer as planned. The bottle is a little over halfway full to a line marked $19,340. The full bottle represents $36,000. The graphic is overlaid on a semi-transparent image of people on a rope team climbing up bare glacier ice.

Searing letter. "At the top of NSF we need people who radiate epistemic authority; beacons of faith in the power of research and education to benefit the Nation ... What we have instead is blades of grass, bending in the wind, however it blows. People without a shred of empathy." Alt text added.
Today NSF Director called a meeting to tell 10% of our workforce "you are fired" and then he did not even have a decency to show up to deliver the message in person. We have seen similar cruel and incompetent behavior in the past, just to mention the way the recent salary decrease was handled; with cruelty, manipulation and miscommunication.

In those difficult times NSF leadership could shine. After all, NSF is unique across the government through our commitment to truth, reason and objectivity.

Instead. NSF leadership leaves behind a legacy of spineless servitude mixed with gross incompetence.

At the top of NSF we need people who radiate epistemic authority; beacons of faith in the power of research and education to benefit the Nation. People who can stand for principles, object injustice, and if needed take the fall for defending the mission. People who can lead.

What we have instead is blades of grass, bending in the wind, however it blows. People without a shred of empathy, unable even to deliver bad news in a humane, organized and sympathetic way. People who do not discuss anything, are not interested in opinion of the Agency they lead, who hide and make decisions behind closed doors. People who do not show up. People who break the rules, such as the Collective Bargaining Agreement, over, and over, and over again, without a shred of responsibility, respect or liability. People who are so incompetent, they cannot even start their own meeting on time, calculate salaries properly, record proper probation period... the list is endless.

The ship is going down. The NSF workforce cries "to the pumps"' NSF leaders are drilling more holes in the hull.

And no, you are NOT doing it to save NSF. You could have saved NSF’s soul, but instead you are ruining it.

Shame on you.

Finally, to our friends fired today: we appreciate you and thank you for your service. Words cannot describe how devastating the news of your shameful firing today are to all of us.

Firings are happening right now at the National Science Foundation. Essential staff are being cut. This isn’t about the budget. If it was, they’d be going after the military (17%) or state appropriations (38%). NSF is 0.7% of the federal budget. All federal employees make up only 4% of the budget.
