"This is not my Zionism" writes the president of the UK Jewish Board of Deputies today. Good for you, but this is the Zionism that exists. Is it about time to start treating Israel as a real state and not as a fairy tale?

Once had an argument about this on a date. I'll bang the drum of it's a platform design issue. The same 'safety' use could be served by an app where you click your kids name, get their location and it pings them that you've looked. The design normalises being able to track without them knowing

"we oppose any actions by any party that undermine the prospects for future peace" Yeh babe, one of those actions might be building illegal settlements! might it be worth looking into creating some consequences for that, Phil? Perhaps no trading with them maybe?

Will also say beyond my general disavowal of this letter written in the name of my community, there is something deeply pernicious about the phrase "extremist settlers". Being a settler is an extremist thing to do, no matter the attempts at normalisation of that act by its cheerleaders.

The Americans here talk about affluenza and consumerism and burrito taxis - the European version is that basically as soon as we have a roof over our head, ~every marginal £ or € is spent on holidays and so Europe now just permanently has a LOT of people on holiday

Yes probably too oversimplifying as you say. On reflection mostly I think what might be interesting (and slightly distinct from collapsing everything into one) is thinking how her analysis on the tyranny of the workplace might have useful parallels in analysing information space.

Great piece. Wonder how this dovetails with Elizabeth Anderson's view of workplaces as authoritarian private governments. Or at least, do you think there's value in linking the workers' rights agenda, as one way of pushing back on private power, to this set of proposals, or is that too bloated?

This is great Josh, I'd probably add one more criteria. "Ability to build a team". Seems vital, and sorely lacking, to have an understanding of how to motivate others to take leadership and act together in service of a project. Rather than top down 'do as I say' management.

We cannot effectively fight antisemitism if we tolerate other forms of hatred
We should be cautious about aligning with anyone who offers vocal support for Jews while expressing or excusing hostility toward Muslims, immigrants, asylum seekers or Palestinians

Any effective 'whole society' effort against antisemitism does involve asking other groups, whether they are professional bodies or communal orgs, to marginalise and criticise within their own camp, sometimes at great difficulty. Zero prospect of achieving that if we won't do that ourselves.

My memory of that situational judgement test was looking at the options, seeing the one that I'd actually do (confronting the issue head on) and deliberately choosing the 'british culturally correct' answer (not saying what you think and referring it through a process/superior)

How did you get a bollard?? I worked at an national trust property in London we had a car cross the pavement and smash into our front wall twice in the space of 13 months. I tried the council, TFL. Eventually got told a bollard would not prevent vehicles, which struck me as the key USP of a bollard!

Exactly! But just thought it was so fascinating how baked in the deference was from such an early stage, to the extent that it permeated the outsourced L&D. It hits my other hobby horse of if CO ministers who are interested in CS reform are ever curious enough to audit civil service learning.

Jake Cohen @sjakeco.bsky.social · 17/04/2026
I think some of it is specifically civil service culture, though. I remember being on a fast stream training where we roleplayed briefing a minister. The facilitator played the minister as a proper bully. When I pushed back, I was chastised and basically told your job is to be obsequious.
