"This is not my Zionism" writes the president of the UK Jewish Board of Deputies today. Good for you, but this is the Zionism that exists. Is it about time to start treating Israel as a real state and not as a fairy tale?

Will also say beyond my general disavowal of this letter written in the name of my community, there is something deeply pernicious about the phrase "extremist settlers". Being a settler is an extremist thing to do, no matter the attempts at normalisation of that act by its cheerleaders.

The Americans here talk about affluenza and consumerism and burrito taxis - the European version is that basically as soon as we have a roof over our head, ~every marginal £ or € is spent on holidays and so Europe now just permanently has a LOT of people on holiday

We cannot effectively fight antisemitism if we tolerate other forms of hatred
We should be cautious about aligning with anyone who offers vocal support for Jews while expressing or excusing hostility toward Muslims, immigrants, asylum seekers or Palestinians

Any effective 'whole society' effort against antisemitism does involve asking other groups, whether they are professional bodies or communal orgs, to marginalise and criticise within their own camp, sometimes at great difficulty. Zero prospect of achieving that if we won't do that ourselves.

New analysis from UCL Policy Lab and More in Common shows that a failure to respect ordinary people has led voters to desert the established parties in favour of populist challengers.

Listening to one interview after another, capsized by the subject of who can use which public toilet. This question is purpose-built to wrong-foot trans allies, but the anti-trans position is absurd. For the love of God, please, someone make them spell out what they want

I keep coming back to this. The chair of our equalities watchdog saying that having somewhere to go to the toilet should be dependent on "powers of advocacy" rather than a right. After years of people delegitimising trans advocacy orgs as malign influences, this phrasing is particularly striking.

"In the think tank project titles and the briefings and the MP op-eds, a world that ultimately not that many people pay attention to, this habit of posing with the language of the right does nothing but signal a crushing lack of ideological self-confidence, and not a hint of desperation."

Given we're discussing how to 'get Britain building again' will raise my smallest policy grudge. Putting a skip on the kerb anywhere in London for a month costs ~£1.3k-£2k in permits and fees to the local council. Yet we're supposedly serious about retrofit and building more housing!

Really cogent and clarifying piece. The distinction between a loneliness epidemic and a solitude one feels vital. Also that we are often crap at choosing what will make us feel better (dopamine is not a virtue). Also enjoyed the exploration of the peculiar solitude of wellness man-fluencers.
