We are all school boys marooned on an island. If not our brother's keeper, we'll be his executioner, for there are no sailors to rescue us.

I read this book last October and it was an excellent hallo-read. Strong recommend if you like sociological story telling with spooky spice.

"Gazing at Medusa's image in his bronze shield... Perseus reaches back over his shoulder and severs Medusa's head. So science fiction pretends at futures in order to cure sick dogs lying in today's road. Indirection is everything. Metaphor is the medicine."-Ray Bradbury

"We have seen men lie, degrade, kill, deport, torture – and each time it was not possible to persuade them not to do these things because they were sure of themselves... Mankind's dialogue has just come to an end. And naturally a man with whom one cannot reason is a man to be feared."-Albert Camus

A.I. doesn't need to make bioweapons. They just have to tell everyone that their neighbors have guns. And they're making some kind of plan. They've been looking at you funny. And whispering behind your back. Maybe you should get a gun, too, just to be safe?

We almost planned out trip to Iceland to coincide with the eclipse. I really wanted to see it there, but other factors won out. We went three weeks ago instead. The weather was overcast the entire time we were there, too. Looks like we made the right call.

Actual faculty getting silenced and fired for their work from the right, and the big issue for a whole bunch of the commentariat is whether there is political discrimination against imagined faculty.

How otherwise intelligent people confuse legal standards (due process) for social/political ones (deciding who should be on a ballot) is honestly quite astounding. We're not depriving Platner of life, liberty or property. No one is entitled to due process before being removed from a ballot.

A basic principle of constitutional law is "The constitution says whatever the Supreme Court says it says." So yeah, those six racists do get to determine what is and is not constitutional. That's just how the law works, in practice, until they change their minds or another SCOTUS says otherwise.

Are accusations truth-functional? When I accuse someone of something is that the same as asserting the claim that they are guilty of what I accuse them of? Or is there a difference--semantic, syntactical, intentional, psychological, logical, etc.--between an accusation and an assertion?

Fun fact: in 1777 General George Washington required all soliders serving in the continental army to be innonculated against small pox, a decision that was likely integral in winning the war. This country was literally born from compulsory immunization. historyofvaccines.org/blog/washing...

I would add: "guilty beyond a reasonable doubt" is the standard for criminal conviction, not public opinion. Juries have the power to incarcerate, so they should have a very high standard of proof. Members of the public have far less power, and should ergo have a much lower standard of proof.

Murc’s Law is “the widespread assumption that only Democrats have any agency or causal influence over American politics”. In other words, Democrats are responsible for Republicans being the way they are and doing the things they do, either because Democrats provoked them or failed to control them.
