Cut from an essay but worth sharing, this is the list of projects I can recall from memory that has tried to make the internet more open. A lot of people have committed their careers to this. People care!
- RSS + Atom
  - arguably the most successful, given podcasts
- RDF & the Semantic Web
- SOLID, subsequently
- CouchDB
- IPFS
- Dat
- BitTorrent arguably
  - but it was always more file-oriented than web-brained
- Ethereum
  - yes, I include it
- ActivityPub
- StatusNet
- Tent
- Friendica
- PubSubHubbub
  - I am not making these up!
- OStatus
- Diaspora
- XMPP
- Nostr
- Secure Scuttlebutt

Tau Ceti model is wild. people write proposals and criteria for how to review stuff, everything else is handled by AI workers taucetiproject.github.io/TauCeti/
Tau Ceti

Humans own the roadmap
Mathematicians set the targets in a separate, human-reviewed roadmap repository. People choose the maths.

AIs write the code
AI agents author the Lean proofs and open pull requests — every theorem machine-checked, no sorries, no stray axioms.

Open review gates everything
AI reviewers judge each PR against fixed, open-source rubrics — correctness, reuse, API, naming, generality — before it can merge.

In 1991, Patagonia added this blunt language to their own catalog: "Everything we make pollutes. Buy fewer items and buy things that last." That level of honesty is almost unthinkable today. Patagonia can speak the truth because it is coherent inside and out. It is structurally strong.

Most tragic things about AI: the folks who should push for democratization of AI tools, which is the real battle, are too focused on denying AI itself to do that. There are many potential issues (and wins), but frontier models available only to the rich is one of the worst.

We've been hard at work on a new website with new guides, better docs, more translations, even our very own blog. We think it looks pretty sharp, too. It's now easier than ever to just build things with AT Protocol. atproto.com
