If the fact its taboo is a myth, it needs to be dispelled as the disinformation is harmful, well meaning or no. But if it is taboo, I need a primary source. Not a "trust me bro". Furthermore why should one culture's story be prioritized as the de-facto over others? I don't know what the answer is.

Sir K's WANDER Society HQ @sirkofwander.bsky.social · 4h
I don't know the answer is. If something is a-okay in one tribe, but condemned by another (allegedly) who has the definitive version? (I know there's serious beef between tribes and cultures with similar languages and stories over whose story is definitive-- to ethnonationalist levels of extreme)

---even before Europeans, multicultural entities. Sometimes they were giants a feature absent from other Algonquin speaking cultures. If that tumblr post is correct, and their tribe does consider it taboo--- So does one person get to be the arbiter of almost a dozen different cultures?

At least with the Navajo, their entity, is hyper specific to their culture (although apparently you can be granted permission to speak of it? Allegedly the author of the Dresden Files who featured one was friends with a Navajo chief) but Wendigos are---

And I wonder if that's the case here. Where something thats more accepted on reservation is treated by taboo by younger members of the culture, especially those in online spaces or with an activist mindset. But for sake of argument, Lets say all those tumblr posts are correct---

It reminds me of a video I watched by CGP Grey (and kind of experienced myself) that raised the disassociation between those who live on reservations and those who live off, namely in how reservations prefer the word "indian" whereas those who aren't use the more commonly used "native american".

Like I don't want to be insensitive. If there is credible reason for Wendigo to be taboo or that speaking it is bad, I'd want to respect that. But the only evidence I'm finding is hearsay from people claiming to be belonging to specific cultures and the internet treating them as gospel.

You aren't allowed to speak of Coyote *at all* in certain seasons. Because that one cultural taboo, does that mean we're not allowed to talk about the folkloric figure across America? Because the one source mentioned in the reddit comes from not referring to Wendigo in winter specifically---

Its almost like if the idea that the speaking of the Wendigo taboo itself is a myth in of itself, like it crossed the streams with the Navajo entity and everyone, well meaningly, assumes its the same! Most I can find is a citation lacking Wikipedia blurb which mentions a Wendigo taboo dance---
100
Sir K's WANDER Society HQ @sirkofwander.bsky.social · 4h
Even if they were. People aren't a monolith. The Wendigo is not exclusive to just one culture, both Cree and Ojibwe and other Algonquin speaking cultures have Wendigo stories, all of them different! One person on tumblr isn't an authority for their whole culture even if the post was true.

Sir K's WANDER Society HQ @sirkofwander.bsky.social · 4h
--- and I can't find *anything* to suggest Wendigos are taboo to speak of. Many accounts from Ojibwe folklorists speak of it rather plainly. Most I can find is a *tumblr* post of someone claiming to be Algonquin saying its taboo and lecturing people for it. Which hardly qualifies as reputable.

I have seen so many leftist youtubers get corrected over mentioning it or just not saying its name and acting like its common knowledge that Wendigo is a taboo thing to talk about... and this has only been in the last few years, so naturally I'm trying to find a primary source---

So, I'm an anthro-nerd working on a story where one of the conceits is all myths are real. Which invariably invites handling how to approach native American entities, I know for a fact that a certain shape-shifting-witch from Navajo folklore is explicitly a taboo to speak of... but: Wendigos?

... and you created a good mix of horror. To this day there's always some part of me thats terrified that if I look out the window at night, there'll be a pair of glowing eyes looking back at me that both invokes the uncanny valley and that "what if its real" in ways no other horror movie can.

Abominable. Yes, the schlocky Bigfoot movie. Cryptid horror is and has been my favorite subgenre of horror as the "what if its real" looms over your head the whole time more so than other horror. Add in an impressionable monster loving tween in the early 2000's...

Auckland, Christchurch, Wellington right off the top of my head. I'm usually good at geography but I *also* have really bad short-term memory problems so I often need to have my memory jogged in a "know when i see it sense' good for multiple choice, bad for off the cuff.

I always manage to forget how CREATURE begins with this really terse and effective summation of how Earth was formed and life began, as it was understood by science at the time. Leaves a lot to the imagination.

You are not your fandom. The question isn't what is your fandom, but rather, what specific niche of your fandom you find yourself in. Identity not with the city your from, but rather the neighborhood you choose in said city.

Sir K's WANDER Society HQ @sirkofwander.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
The trick is not attaching yourself to the entire fandom of how many tens of thousands or more people... but rather finding a specific niche in that fandom of like-minded people who like the thing in the same way you do. Humans inherently self-sort and congregate to like-minded people.

It doesn't matter *what* group that is. The same is true with Political parties, same is true with religion, same is true with academia, and the same is true for fandoms. If you look at any large group of people past a certain size... they will all be toxic to some extent.

Every group of human beings, once it reaches a certain number, demographically, there's going to be bad apples. People who gatekeep, people who predate, people who form cliques, bully one another, or abuse the social dynamics of the group to consolidate their own social power, capital, etc.

The only good thing I heard recorded in interviews about is that they got an actual Amazonian tribe to act in it and they had a really good time of it, playing the heel. But that was *years* ago, and could have been just whitewashing of the on-set reality what became of it. 1/2

Pterosaurs: An Artistic History in Four Parts (Art by Joseph Smit, Zdenek Burian, John Sibbick, and @markwitton.bsky.social)
A mixed group of pterosaurs, all with slick, featureless skin and pointed, swooping wings. Some soar with outstretched limbs, others cling frog-like to a stony cliff, and others perch with their feet flat on the rock.A Pteranodon with a plump, bat-like torso and short, stumpy legs drops a mouthful of fish to a group of sprawled, leathery-skinned young which are strewn about the top of a stony seaside cliff. In the distance, two other giant pterosaurs can be seen soaring toward the sea below. Two huge ornithocheirid pterosaurs with rounded crests at the end of their snout soar over coastal waves, while a smaller, duller pterosaur with no crest feeds its well-developed youngster in a bird-like fashion. Two enormous azhdarchids with slender builds and erect, upright stances scavenge the carcass of a dead Triceratops beside a pond. One stands tall, while the other is mid-launch, carrying a strip of meat in its beak.
