Not necessarily a selection of my favorite media, of these lists, but here's a lot of the most formative ones all the same. (THE GAMES ONE DOESN'T HAVE FUCKING AVP EXTINCTION THOSE BASTARDS) Had to make some tough calls on some of these and including some series that aren't good but formative :v

I always manage to forget how CREATURE begins with this really terse and effective summation of how Earth was formed and life began, as it was understood by science at the time. Leaves a lot to the imagination.

Every group of human beings, once it reaches a certain number, demographically, there's going to be bad apples. People who gatekeep, people who predate, people who form cliques, bully one another, or abuse the social dynamics of the group to consolidate their own social power, capital, etc.

Pterosaurs: An Artistic History in Four Parts (Art by Joseph Smit, Zdenek Burian, John Sibbick, and @markwitton.bsky.social)
A mixed group of pterosaurs, all with slick, featureless skin and pointed, swooping wings. Some soar with outstretched limbs, others cling frog-like to a stony cliff, and others perch with their feet flat on the rock.A Pteranodon with a plump, bat-like torso and short, stumpy legs drops a mouthful of fish to a group of sprawled, leathery-skinned young which are strewn about the top of a stony seaside cliff. In the distance, two other giant pterosaurs can be seen soaring toward the sea below. Two huge ornithocheirid pterosaurs with rounded crests at the end of their snout soar over coastal waves, while a smaller, duller pterosaur with no crest feeds its well-developed youngster in a bird-like fashion. Two enormous azhdarchids with slender builds and erect, upright stances scavenge the carcass of a dead Triceratops beside a pond. One stands tall, while the other is mid-launch, carrying a strip of meat in its beak.

Today's four random pieces of paleoart: Luis Rey's Giganotosaurus, Richard Dolan's Einiosaurus, @thebiobob.bsky.social's Spinosaurus, and José Olivier's Mosasaurus and Geosaurus!
A towering green and grey-brown Giganotosaurus in a volcanic landscape. Its huge head hangs over the viewer, shown in an extreme perspective. Its snout is lined with thick keratin and its neck sports a low ridge of spines. Behind, a volcano belches a plume of ash into the blue sky.Portrait of the hook-horned ceratopsid Einiosaurus. It has a wrinkled, almost wood-like skin texture, and its dark eye carries a mournful expression.A massive Spinosaurus with a crocodile-like colouration poses threateningly towards a conspecific on a sandy shore. Its muscular arms are spread wide and its deep, yellow-streaked tail curves into the air behind it. Its head is held low, angling its long, straight crest toward the interloper, which observes with a neutral, unimpressed expression. A forest-lined watercourse stretches across the horizon, and the heads of enormous sauropods poke above the canopy.A rugose-scaled, fringe-backed mosasaur winds sinuously through murky green waves, taking a breath at the surface. Beneath, the slithery form of a fishlike thalattosuchian zooms past.

The War of the Worlds (mini 🧵) inspired by the illustrations of Henrique Alvim Corrêa
They were huge round bodies—or, rather, heads—about four feet in diameter, each body having in front of it a face. This face had no nostrils—indeed, the Martians do not seem to have had any sense of smell, but it had a pair of very large dark-coloured eyes, and just beneath this a kind of fleshy beak. In the back of this head or body—I scarcely know how to speak of it—was the single tight tympanic surface, since known to be anatomically an ear, though it must have been almost useless in our dense air. In a group round the mouth were sixteen slender, almost whiplike tentacles, arranged in two bunches of eight each. These bunches have since been named rather aptly, by that distinguished anatomist, Professor Howes, the hands. Even as I saw these Martians for the first time they seemed to be endeavouring to raise themselves on these hands, but of course, with the increased weight of terrestrial conditions, this was impossible. There is reason to suppose that on Mars they may have progressed upon them with some facility. -H.G. Wells 'The War of the Worlds,' chapter 2

Today’s four random pieces of palaeoart: Gregory S. Paul’s Archaeopteryx, Karen Carr’s “Pleurocoelus” (Astrodon), @wrycritic.bsky.social’s Jianchangnathus, and Arnold Lobel’s Stegosaurus!
A pair of slenderly built Archaeopteryx with svelte, taut muscles and form-fitting feathery coats display to each other on a beach. Bands and eyespots decorate their wings and tail fans. Behind, two more Archaeopteryx fly past. Further still, a huge flock of pterosaurs dot the sky.An adult sauropod accompanies two youngsters at the edge of a forest, beside a lake. Their grey-green skin has a wrinkled, leathery texture reminiscent of a giant tortoise.A scruffy-furred, toothy pterosaur with a blue and red-tinged snout and a short tail ending in a rugose flap of tissue perches atop a person’s arm, which it about equals in length.A heavyset, squat Stegosaurus with prominent pinkish cream scales evoking a large lizard or crocodylian. It is stepping into the water from a mossy slope, its back bunched tightly into a bell curve shape. The beaky snout and cartoonishly short tail nearly drag along the ground as it goes.

A photo taken from the passenger seat of a moving car. trees and a guardrail, and a rear view mirror in the bottom of the frame. a blue sky and lush greenery. The Old Woman of the Woods, a gigantic shaggy bear-like creature with a face like an old lady (aside from a gigantic red toothy jaw) peers at the passing car.
