Have to cheat here, but Once Upon a Time I LOVED the first 4 seasons (season 1 & season 4B are the best story arcs in the show) But season 5 left me cold. I didn't hate it, but I stopped caring From what I've heard, season 6 is even more of a mixed bag & season 7 is terrible

Been going down a bit of a Dark Shadows rabbit hole again. I mistakenly decided to rewatch Tim Burton's movie again. ...this has building up for a long time

Apologies in advance. This may be longer than what I normally go for. As a fan of Dark Shadows, I have A LOT to say about this.

I can understand the conceit of of reimagining a soap opera as a comedy. The heightened emotions and over-the-top melodrama can lend itself to humor. But one of two things happened here (possibly both):

1. Dark Shadows was the wrong soap opera to do this with.
or
2. Tim Burton was the wrong person for this project.

(Really, Dark Shadows should be done by someone like James Gunn or Zach Cregger)

Dark Shadows just doesn't seem to understand what made the original soap opera work...or almost anything about it for that matter. Really, it just seems like an excuse for Tim Burton & Johnny Depp to sleepwalk through their usual schtick. For all the "credit" Burton gets for this film, most (if not, all) of its problems can be attributed to the script by Seth Grahame-Smith.

Also, the film keeps forgetting it is a comedy. There's a serious tone problem here as the can't decide what it really wants to be.

It's hard to judge Dark Shadows on its own merits as a film. Because my issues with it are as an adaptation. And I find the remainder of my review will be comparing it to the original series.

As mentioned above, Barnabas just becomes a vehicle for Johnny Depp schtick, & just another Depp stock character.

Though I will pause to say, the only characters in this adaptation to come out unscathed are Willie, Elizabeth, & Angelique. And really, it's no surprise that Michelle Pfeiffer & Eva Green are giving the best performances in the movie.

Carolyn comes close. The biggest problem is at the end, she gets a plot twist that I think is supposed to be an homage to Quentin Collins? It's stupid and serves no purpose other than to play into the trope of "soap opera twist." (& there is a lot of moments like that throughout this movie, not just pertaining to Carolyn. None of them have any buildup, & none of them play well)

Mrs. Johnson & Laura Collins are completely unrecognizable from their series counterparts. And they're so pointless to the narrative (okay, Laura's a deus ex machina) that they should've just been cut entirely.

David carries a similar supernatural affinity to his TV series counterpart. But, he misses the mark. David is not a precocious little scamp, as the film portrays. David is a freaking psycho!

The TV series used the characters of Victoria Winters & Maggie Evans interchangeably. Especially after Victoria is written out of the show & Maggie assumes her role. The movie...takes that literally in the stupidest execution possible. It doesn't help that Bella Heathcote is unfortunately giving the worst performance in the movie.
(And Josette isn't even a character in the film; she's a plot device who serves to be fridged for Barnabas's sake)

The film is so close to getting Roger right. The sleaze is there. But this Roger lacks the charm. Roger in the series, surprisingly, will often play into the "asshole with a heart of gold" trope. This Roger is just completely irredeemable.

And probably worst of all. I saved the worst for last: this film's treatment of Julia. If done right, Helena Bonham Carter would have PERFECT spot on casting as Julia Hoffman. But Julia is probably served the worst here. At least all of the other characters, no matter how wrong the film got them, had some semblance of the TV series counterparts. This Julia bears absolutely no resemblance to who she was in the show.

Really, the only thing keeping this from being Tim Burton's worst film is that Planet of the Apes & Dumbo exist.

It may not be Burton's worst film, but it's the Tim Burton film I hate the most.

Watching it after the prequels makes inherently worse. It's the only film in the OT Lucas had complete creative control over (yes, yes, I know there were ghost writers like his wife & Coppola)...just like the prequels. Revisiting it after the prequels, Lucas's faults are so much more noticeable
