Yeah, I'm from East Anglia as well, so yeah, agree - it was great for reading discarded stormfronts on the bus home as a teenager. But that's not because people have a nazi gene. It's because places like it foster nationalism, and progressive politics struggles to engage with English Nationalism

low level of unionised labour. few metropolitan areas. Only national identity is English. Imagine if Plaid Cymru was largely rural Ceredigion and Gwynedd and had no language or history of oppression to unify around.

my feeling is that students know that degrees do not guarantee them a decent lifestyle post graduation, but know that doing a degree buys them time to transition from education to what ever happens next. Some of them get into their course, but many just want 3 hassle free years in their life

that is a hypothetical on the level of near light speed interstellar travel though. In much the same way as I won't be worrying about the impact of time dilation on human civilisation, I'm happy to not get apocalyptic about AI sentience. It's a distraction from the real threats AI currently presents

nah, having a mind is a necessary condition for psychosis. AI is somewhere between a statistical procedure and a library search

This is the best product listing copy I’ve ever read
Nothing lasts forever, and that includes the Roman Empire.

The Fall of Rome-Scented Candle smells like cypress trees and red wine. Light it and watch the Roman forum melt into a puddle of wax while you quietly contemplate the impermanence of civilizations and/or candles.

Do you think individual Romans understood that their civilization was collapsing? Or did it happen so gradually that they were able to ignore the warning signs—international trade breaking down, the senate becoming a rubber stamp for the supreme leader, and political violence becoming expected during transfers of power?

It’s hard to say, because it’s impossible to imagine being in that kind of situation. In any event—hope you enjoy the candle!

In other words: If AI does one thing well, it's making explicit what «being human» means under current conditions. The answer cannot lie in a return to a supposedly universal humanism, but rather in a radical critique of these conditions that understands the role of AI systems in maintaining them 5/

It's the same with Brexit. Most people vote out of self interest, whereas as most progressives tend to make arguments based on abstract liberal principles. There isn't a shared culture anymore. We need to explain why these ideas make everyone's life better, rather than hope people share our values.

there's a tendency in AI boosterism to present LLM as a techno upgrade on a priest/guru/therapist and it"s entirely bogus- even if it delivered, it's infantilising, and there is no reason why compiling the average answer to a question should be the right solution to life.

because those reasons still work for a lot of people and until the source of that discontent is resolved people like Farage have got the upper hand. Reform voters are a significant demographic, so they have to be included, the idea they can be won over with rational economics is naive.

1. proof? 2. rubbish, if Europe gives up on the EU what then. 3. the economy needs to become more evenly distributed. 4. no. 5 London was the region benefiting most from the EU. 6. they drag everyone in their direction

The relevance of Enoch Powell to Brexit is this: Brexit was all about taking back control, stopping England from being subsumed/controlled by foreigners. That's a very Powellian sentiment. The Brexit that most people voted for was in support of this idea, rather than anything to do with the economy.

dream on. That whole #FBPE delusion is reliant upon 1. the EU letting us in. 2. the reactionary tide sweeping thru Europe suddenly abating. 3. Our economy magically becoming more equal. The UK wasted 5 years on Brexit, we need to forget about it and focus on boosting production outside of London

A reprehensible but successful argument against Brexit, would have started with - this will boost immigration from Africa and Asia. The single market was fine until it became linked with refugee camps on the French Channel coast

You refferred to voting adults as toddlers who deserve to be ignored because they can't get sound arguments. That's the rhetoric of mental defectivity I was reacting to. WRT alienation: the Brexit argument was largely a reframe of Enoch Powell's rivers of blood dressed up with mercantile tinsel.

Shaun Lewin @sionlewin.bsky.social · 05/06/2025
If someone feels alienated, they are alienated, it's subjective state. We can't make a functioning democracy by denouncing fellow citizens as intellectually defective or cultists. Ultimately, it's not enough to be right, we have to understand why people are wrong.

Shaun Lewin @sionlewin.bsky.social · 05/06/2025
I don't think I'd want to call anyone capable of running a pub an idiot. Ultimately, he's OK with Farage because he believes in the same values as Farage. There needs to be more effort put into translating decolonialisation into concepts right wing people accept, or an economic miracle.
000
Shaun Lewin @sionlewin.bsky.social · 05/06/2025
That reasoning totally failed in 2016 and there's nothing to indicate it would work today. Right now, millions of people live in a country they feel alienated from and miss the EU only because its harder to move to cosy ex pat communities in Spain. We can't ignore them without abandoning democracy.
100
Shaun Lewin @sionlewin.bsky.social · 05/06/2025
and what's your solution to that problem? We can't send every gammon to a Remoaner reeducation centre. I think that the way he dismisses Boris Johnson (although not by name) is telling. Boris lost a lot of followers once the weakness of his arguments became apparent.

Shaun Lewin @sionlewin.bsky.social · 05/06/2025
He's basically said 'if I had understood the impact Brexit would have on my life, I wouldn't have voted for it'. Him not picking up on that at the time is probably down to him finding Farage's racist nationalism compelling. Calling him a twat is satisfying, but also an admission of political failure

Shaun Lewin @sionlewin.bsky.social · 05/06/2025
I've voiced this too antagonistically. This "buyer's remorse" is the point at which left arguments can find common ground with the right. If we don't want to live in FarageReich, we're going to have to talk people out of their nihilistic xenophobia, as using shame and derision clearly doesnt work.

Shaun Lewin @sionlewin.bsky.social · 05/06/2025
Loads of comments from people thinking they're smart and the pub owner is an idiot. However, he's realised he made an error back in 2016, whilst they are all continuing to repeat the same confused thinking that led to Brexit. It's not enough to be right, the argument has to land with the audience.

This is exactly it. The concept of a LLM doesn't need to be mediated via an identity. It could just be clippy, or something closer to a print out. The current UI both makes C3P0 seem way closer than is actually the case and attempts to drive product uptake through hacking our desire to engage.
