Hello #historyteacher folks. Has anyone had success with embedding meaningful oracy in the classroom? Im doing a Future Learn course on it at the moment and would love to hear methods specifically used in the history classroom

I think its important to recognise the importanct of chocolate. SLT take note, providing equal parts chocolate digestives and rich tea will only lead to whole school CPD starting out with disappointment for staff. A fig roll would be a nice change of pace too.

Spent the day at an English Heritage castle watching a reenactment of the Battle Hastings, in true #HistoryTeacher style I think Y7 would have a firmer grasp of History if I was allowed to use horses.

Maori culture, history of the ministry skirt, rugby kits of 20thC. It also underlined how they get distracted by ppt transformations and cannot reference a source website. Potential for some cross curricular work with computing? But they generally worked so hard when given that freedom to explore

In term 6 I did a IT/research lesson with Y7 on the history of fashion. They were allowed to pick any time periods, any location, any particular look (sports uniforms/ military/ footwear etc). Because IT had air-con and mine was 30c. They came up with such a range of topics... #historyteacher

I really miss the twitter #historyteacher chats. It was a great thing to be part of. Looking back over my account, got to 2020 and a lot of "how are we teaching XYZ over lockdown?" That support was invaluable when we were all away from our classes and colleagues

It's a hard one. I used Anne Greene who survived the death penalty to make links between crime and medicine and how they really wanted her to be dead so they could cut her up since there were far less female criminals getting the death penalty. Love that she survived.

18 vs 80 named figures in one of my Crime and Punishment textbooks. I was shocked there were that many people named in it, as the course often feels more general than focused on individuals but still far more men

In a 20thc KS3 textbook there were more references to Hitler than to all named women in the whole book. And in cartoons when the gender is unrelated, the default is male (eg. Explaining capitalism vs communism)

A KS3 textbook shows a dramatic gap in both images and named figures in history. The women that were included were almost exclusively either: - Royal - Suffragettes - Thatcher

My lesson planning has got faster each year. Unless I'm planning something I really care about, and I get super excited and side tracked and try to fit a degree level amount of info into one Y7 lesson. Then feel physically pained when I have to strip it back a bit. Anyone else?

According to TES: Teachers reported less of an interest for subject- or phase-specific knowledge or pedagogy in CPD than in 2023: 33 per cent in 2024, down from 38 per cent. Clearly, none of the 66% have ever been to @1972shp.bsky.social or @histassoc.bsky.social history conferences.
