The Centre for Computing History holds a Sinclair QL that was actually Property of Sinclair itself, used in R&D at 25 Willis Road, Cambridge. It was bicycled around town for demos - shown to Sir Clive Sinclair in person! 1984 in one case, still going.

A Z80 CPU etched directly onto glass? Sharp and SEL pulled it off back in 2002 - a world first. Digital logic formed right on the LCD substrate, a step toward ultra-thin 'sheet computers.' The little 8-bit heart of the ZX Spectrum still showing off. z80.info/sharp/z80_glas.htm

At 52, I asked myself if I'm finally too old for the AI revolution. But looking back at where I started, my first computer was a 1982 Sinclair ZX81 with 1KB of RAM and spongy keys. 🧵

Sinclair officially launched the ZX81 in the US on October 7, 1981 with 20,000 units available for sale, at a price of $149.95 assembled and $99.95 in kit form. As with the ZX80, they sold directly to the American market by mail order, via ads in computer publications and popular consumer magazines.

So, I wonder if those first ZX81 sold in the states only had the 1k of RAM or did they get the 2k of RAM upgrade that the Timex Sinclair 1000 came with.

My first console was an Atari 2600 with six switches or levers, a Xmas present in 1979. My first home computer was a Timex Sinclair 1000 that I bought myself in 1982 with money from my part-time job at McDonalds. What were your first console and computer? When did you get them?

Yeah due to the ZX81’s memory map (and incomplete ROM addressing), anything over 16Kb became complicated but with paging you could add a lot of memory. BASIC could not address it directly but various tricks were possible.

If you combined all the processing power of every exhibit in the Computer History Museum - and there are a lot of - it still wouldn’t match your phone. Progress is scary.

My best friend had a ZX81. I wanted one but didn't have the technical nous to put it together. (Still don't). Spent hours typing code in and saving to cassette tape. That was fun, but I never graduated further than that with programming.

Sinclair ZX81 was our first, I remember it used to overheat which made us quickly switch to the Spectrum instead. That one stayed a little longer and was then replaced by a C64 with the tape drive 🫠
