@simplybastow.com do you have any suggestions for teams that are going 0-to-1 for an enterprise product? Enterprise sales cycles need commitment to features. If the team works in a Now-Next-Later framework, it seems like you can't start the sales cycle until you have MVP. Am I wrong?

Janna Bastow @simplybastow.com · 18/12/2024
Enterprises don’t need every feature upfront—they need confidence in your process. Show your experiments, share your progress, and build trust in your ability to deliver.

Use Now-Next-Later to focus on problems, not promises. Now: Where you’ll start. The first experiment to gain traction. Next: Steps to solve the larger problem. Later: The vision that ties it all together.

MVPs in enterprise aren’t about the single release—it’s about proving you can solve their specific problem. That usually means several features along the way, some quick wins, others heavier lifts.

Great question! Enterprise sales = managing the iron triangle of time, scope, and cost. Quality isn’t negotiable. But here’s the key: enterprises aren’t pushing for features, they’re pushing for commitment to solving problems.

Traditional roadmaps are long gone. However, @simplybastow.com's Now, Next, Later model makes a lot of sense. You can get away with 1Q stuff in small companies. Larger companies require much more planning and need a way for departments and organizations to align. A roadmap makes this easier.

Hehe went to a high end sushi place recently (omakase style) and discovered part way through the meal I had a slight allergy to uni. Initially lovely, then a weird metallic after taste I couldn't shake and a tongue that felt prickly for hours 😂 Was too polite to say anything, ate everything 🫠

Hehe, I'm reading a compelling novel (Hench) right now which is written from the other side, in which they look at the collateral damage a well meaning but clumsy superhero causes. I may never watch another superhero movie the same way 😅

Happy to help! My POV is that I have to sift through A LOT of pretty great candidates, in order to find the ones who are truly stellar, and in this market, it's like that everywhere. Amazing people just aren't getting callbacks, and stars are getting picked on a series of signals that add up.

(obviously, ideally, there's an alignment of your qualities and what they need otherwise maybe it's not a great job for you 😅 but the letters that cut through are the ones that really tell the hiring manager that you're going to make their lives better in a tangible way)

Janna Bastow @simplybastow.com · 13/11/2023
Counterintuitively: A cover letter shouldn't be about you, even with your awesome qualities. It should be about how you're going to be able to solve the problems the company has (whether they've stated them explicitly or whether you have to do a bit of investigating to figure out what they need)

Yeah, you can literally go buy amazing experiences (at all price points), of course they are manufactured, the world is crafted for our entertainment. Doesn't matter if people don't get benefit from meeting you. You'll get benefit from meeting other amazing people. Get out there and do stuff. Enjoy.

Quit jobs or people or situations, if they aren't working for you, as you've only got one life, and you've got to give yourself space to find experiences that jive. Just don't quit life itself, as you don't know what amazing people, experiences, meals, laughs etc are still in store (lots, promise!)

I'm so happy that we, like... *have* Super Mario. Like, that it exists in the form its in right now at all. I can't imagine someone pitching, from scratch, a jovial all-ages game about two middle-aged plumbers jumping around a mushroom-themed fairy tale world to a modern game/animation studio.

Indeed! I love that the core 'brand' has stayed strong and yet has matured and diversified into such a mix of different games and even mediums. Very few companies can pull this off for a span of a few years, let alone half a lifetime.

I carry much of the above as well as a full on 'repair kit' including steristrips, antibiotic cream, assortment of pills, etc, as my partner and my step kids are endearingly reckless and regularly in need of patching up on the go 😅
