But well done to the Greens for fixing the Middle East. Or at least bits of it. Go pass motions to fix the wars in Yemen and Iran and while you’re at it fix Sudan and Ethiopia please. You can do it.

@sianberry.bsky.social may well feel this way - and I don’t doubt her. HOWEVER Zionism is Racism is designed to assign Jews into 2 groups, Good Jews and Bad Jews. Good ones do as told. We Bad ones are bad because we feel affinity for Israel despite dismay and disgust at the Gaza genocide.

Rory Stewart picks Badenoch’s triple lock position apart on The Rest is Politics, saying that she’s flying in the face of Tory will by keeping it, but she’s appealing to the grey vote. Please try to ignore my own greyness. Either way the triple lock is bad. Just go.

Post of the day👏👏👏 “In reality, let's just say that there are enough hard left activists who regard Jewish people who aren't totally opposed to Israel's existence as unpeople” This has been true for half a century or more.

This is generally the gas generators, so as gas prices go up, all electricity gets more expensive. Is that nut? Yes.
010
Simon Ziegler @simonziegler.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
The UK electricity market is badly placed to handle fossil fuel crisis. All elec producers get paid the same amount per MWh for each 30 min period. This price is determined by a bidding system where the highest price is paid for the bids that match generation requirement.

Add to this that hedging locks in the current forward curve which is probably adverse right now for current hedging. So all in all, hedging is, for the broad economy of limited use. That brings us to what we should do….
110
Simon Ziegler @simonziegler.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
There’s a limit to the amount of hedging that can be done (I was a derivatives trader, including briefly commodities). There’s a deep market but not that deep. And the hedging can only reach so far forward in time, meaning that we can get a respite, but not full, permanent insulation from shocks.

Thank. Do you think I’m underestimating a need to engage early and build support in Brussels with my 2 phase thoughts of domestic consensus behind the idea followed by a more realist process with Brussels?
121
Simon Ziegler @simonziegler.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
2. During this domestic consensus building period, who in the EU do we need to have on side before negotiations start? EU member states? Brussels (which I use a a big, vague, waving hands expansively term)?
141
Simon Ziegler @simonziegler.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
I have 2 thoughts/queations 1. Don’t Burnham et al first need to create a developing domestic narrative to support the aim of UK accession first? In that case whether we’re entirely in line with Brussels thinking might be premature.

Thank you for this. I appreciate the support. The hard left have been doing this sort of thing since I was at uni in the mid 80s. Our SU held this debate and it lost. The SU VP threatened me personally with being excluded from the SU (big whoop) if I failed to attend and speak to support the motion.

This is such a consequential election for the whole world. There are two candidates. Lula is at best compromised but Bolsonaro is an outright disaster. Lula needs to win but a lot of voters won’t be voting for him because they see the bad side of him while forgetting how much worse Bolsonaro is.

Simon Ziegler @simonziegler.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
Agree. And I’m a Labour voter. The unions weren’t there to protect workers, they existed to damage the country. Leyland workers eventually ousted their union leaders because they were too annoyed at losing pay too endless strikes over nothing.

This Israeli Govt specialise, among other terrible things, in extreme and insulting rhetoric. The idea that Mahmood, Khan or Mamdani are Islamist is insane.

Simon Ziegler @simonziegler.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
Interesting point this. A lot of people who, like me are disgusted by Brexit insist that Europe wants nothing to do with the UK. Now that we’re a few years removed from the negotiations, this feels like unevidenced projection.

You can set your watch by the Telegraph publishing an article slamming the concept of EVs. I just charged mine overnight adding 200 miles and costing me about £3.70. And it’s not a small car. In every possible way it’s better than my previous petrol/diesel cars.

3. The telecoms bubble and DotCom were financed by a lot of debt. Much of tech self finances from revenue.

Simon Ziegler @simonziegler.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
I’m not saying that the markets aren’t a hit bubbly, but this isn’t a like for like comparison: 1. Price earnings ratios for the concentrated tech cos are good, whereas say in the DotCom bubble they were non existent. 2. Railroads really were 1 industry. The tech cos are super diverse.

Watching Finding Britain's Slave Traders with @davidolusoga.bsky.social. My mother's family are Sephardic Jews, arriving in England from 1665. I looked up the Sephardic community and it's certain that somehow I descend from investors in the Royal African Company. It's chilling.

However counter terrorism police investigating implies no advance warning. So there could be deliberate misinfo about security involvement, or political spin. We can’t know atm and I guess may never know.
110
Simon Ziegler @simonziegler.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
This is going to be interesting to watch unfurl. It was rapidly reported on the BBC that the investigation was by counter terrorism police rather than MI5 or GCHQ. This is what Gloucs Police said. Now it’s possible that security service involvement isn’t admitted.

I studied Electrical Engineering graduating nearly 40 years ago. It added a year and a Masters because we studied a little marketing, sociology, business, accounting and did a series of group projects spanning 3 years. It changed my outlook immeasurably for the better.

That encapsulates everything that we’re seeing wrong politically. Suckers are being manipulated well. Swerving wildly, I was pleased to see Burnham on TV saying that he wants to argue things like immigration in actual figures and elderly care/homelessness/lower bus fares on whole economic analysis.

I built my first UX in 2020 on what is now quite a big FinTech platform I own. I’m lucky to have clever users who express what they want or dislike. Some of the best insights came when I watched them working and pause in confusion: my signal to remove UX friction.

What a barnstorming thread from @ruthdeyermond.bsky.social, coming from intimate knowledge. I lived through this and certainly couldn’t write this. It would be good for journalists who claim to have answers to actually know their history. Ahistorical, overtly political narratives are unforgivable.
