No idea what this is, but it sounds like something for one man to wipe another man. If anyone does know what it is, don’t tell me.

After expulsion of 20% of the population for having an immigrant background, they would not have an economy or an army.

The ability to pour hundreds of millions of pounds into a loss-making TV channel, bent on wrenching British politics sharply to the right, is yet another of the ways in which extreme wealth is trying to remake UK democracy. It needs to be part of any serious conversation about political funding.

I'd go further and argue Euro membership is an opportunity not a threat whether in trade, financial markets, or how UK personnel could come to shape the ECB. Building a sustainable outcome for the UK in the EU has to look beyond FoM and start engaging with how to integrate in Schengen and Euro

One of the reasons cited for Brexit was that the Eurozone countries would forge ahead leaving out the UK. That only applies if there is some reason why the UK can never adopt the euro.

The US that is able to communicate with us is that of the culture industries, of academics, of urbanites and intellectuals. We can easily forget that it is a white settler state

The RN may pursue French interests à la Meloni, but the AfD won’t pursue German interests. It is all about breaking Germany

Why? You draw your pension from where you have worked and take your health insurance with you. Those don’t move back, only your spending does.

Brexit is more nationalistic than being in the EU. For the English, unionism is more nationalistic than granting independence. Nationalism is not a policy as such it is a quasi religion and culture. The choice for each nationalistic person was to be as nationalistic as possible personally

Quite, I waded in and realised it’s pointless. You can argue against opinions, you can’t argue against a mentality or culture

It is possible that the “I want the EU but not all of it” is perceived as a moderate or consensus seeking option in the UK context and there’s no real conviction behind it, in which case it just has to be taken off the menu.

Of course, realistically tabloid campaigns against Brussels regulations would never stop and the UK would have to decide to live with them

Regulations and directives come about after consultation to which anyone can contribute. The interested parties are eg producers vs consumers or polluters vs environmentalists, not so much state vs state. A lot concerns B2B about which there is no reason to have an opinion outside the sector

At this point, the US military has become a teenage boy who is still insecure about his masculinity. It can do that if it wants, but maybe don’t combine it with an actual war though

Would the UK as a new member 1) try to advance integration in response to Russian and US hostility or 2) try to prevent something, anything to say “look what we were able to prevent now that we are a member”? I try to imagine 1), I want 1), but I don’t see it on the horizon, I see 2).

Ultimately, the practical stuff is irrelevant. When they say “we will or will not have control of XYZ”, it’s not XYZ that is at issue but “we”.

They are essentially very xenophobic people who believed that before anyone told them and would not believe anything else if anyone said it. They are not gullible in other spheres or necessarily dimwits, just xenophobes

Simon B.-M. @simonbm.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
Essentially objections to bits of the EU like Schengen or the euro are the same as the objection to membership, just chauvinism. If chauvinism is overcome enough to think of joining, a bit more and it’s enough to join the real EU

Simon B.-M. @simonbm.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
I don’t suppose it will. If the UK can’t muster the desire to join the real existing EU, it will just put it off until later

It shows ignorance both of the mentality in Europe and of how to deal with xenophobes and takes no account of changes since 2016 both in public opinion in the UK and the relative economic development of eg the UK vs Poland

He describes FoM as a dogmatic principle when it’s actually the most popular of the acquis across the continent. It’s personal, not just economic or political. The xenophobia that it exposed in the UK was largely a result of not using the existing option of a moratorium on FoM for new accessions

In European colonialism, racism had many functions: justification of slavery, different rights for different people, paternalism, preventing mingling and assimilation of Europeans into the colonies, purpose and pride for the colonising nation. Apart from being wrong, it is now useless and weakens us
010
Simon B.-M. @simonbm.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
It’s also weird because European racism was created for the purpose of colonialism and it was always US policy to destroy European colonial empires and now they don’t exist.

Simon B.-M. @simonbm.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
The new thing is US racists claiming to be the true heirs of a European heritage right back to the Roman Empire and Europeans betraying it by not being racist. It’s weird not just because US racists are pure consumers who know less than a dog about our cultural heritage.

The three far-right parties, Tories, Reform and Restore have about 50% together. All want to leave the ECHR and therefore the Council of Europe and blow up the GFA and TCA. It would be a worse crisis than Brexit
