Some students enter UK secondary school unable to use a mouse then learn on systems too locked down to teach real computing, with web-app delivered content. In a cyber war, the UK would not have time to "ramp up", we'd be toast. Once we have sufficiently neutered AI, our ignorance will be complete.

Microsoft Windows and Office have become so web-centric in many schools that local file workflows are barely usable. This actively undermines the teaching of real computing, particularly when centralised security policies arbitrarily disable core functionality.

Tha same room has a broken AC, and one of the two ceiling windows is broken so cannot be opened. Luckily there are 4 others that can be opened a little (don't want the kids jumping out of the frying pan).

The next big step in AI will be pro-active as opposed to reactive agents. AI's that actively pursue goals, and chase students for work while offering challenging timely questions.

I have always struggled in education, and finding jobs. Conversely I have always done well in jobs. From September all I need is a job I can build up a head of steam, preferably something involving python and learning.

In teacher training schools teach you the theories they want you to use. The universities teach you many more, some of which are significantly better, but sometimes harder to implement.

England faces drought as reservoir water levels dwindle. Rationing beckons. Population increased but no new reservoirs for 35 yrs; no desalination plants. Companies fleeced customers, borrowed to pay high dividends, low investment. People pay for privatisation follies. End the scam. Nationalise.

Education restricts time for intrinsic learners to explore autonomously, they are much too focused on ensuring extrinsically motivated individuals have a clear learning path. Self-regulated, life-long learners are not given time to explore, and it's this exploration that produces new insights.

How the EU youth mobility scheme could save Brexit
The Chancellor Rachel Reeves and her successors should encourage youth mobility not to reverse Brexit, but to save it.

It would be nice if we could teach smaller groups. Our students need a lot of personal attention to really fulfil their potential.

Ideas for teaching computing to a student banned from computers? Year 9, the rest of the class will spend the whole term on App Lab building a movie booking site. First lesson is tomorrow and I have nothing.

Absolutely, when we moved back to the UK we hyper analysed schools reports. We applied for an outstanding and got accepted, but were placed in a different school in the Trust. On paper it didn't look great, but our daughter thrived there, and refused to move when given the option.

Simon Euro @simon-euro.bsky.social · 21/04/2025
This is "supposed" to be a good school, formally outstanding. You are right though, I know what to look for now. I don't put much weight behind Ofsted ratings anymore though.

Our pupils reorganised keyboard letters to spell swear words. The school got new keyboards so now the letters cannot be reattached or fixed. The school is over subscribed, so computer rooms are in communal spaces / corridors. It's a nightmare trying to keep everything in working order.

Sometimes I feel Scratch is used so non specialist teachers can comfortably teach computing. I agree important concepts often get lost. It's very disheartening.

We are struggling to find people with coding knowledge who want to teach. The only reason I looked at teaching is because I was working at home alone and it was very isolating. There is definitely an opportunity for a Computer teaching system aimed at schools.

Thank you. I definitely want power through. What I do next year is up in the air though. Considering building a coding tool to help schools teach programming even with non-specialist teachers, just need to find a way to pay the bills at the same time.

My main placement is difficult, I teach computing but budget issues and vandalism mean the whole process is demoralising and the IT very slow. I want to inspire, but the faculty is struggling, combined with the SCITT paperwork, PGCE, and some mentor issues and I dread going to work some days.

I taught Computing abroad, then as a Cover Supervisor here. I decided to do a SCITT so I could teach my subject. Post COVID students know very little about computing and many don't want to learn. Coupled with the torrent of SCITT paperwork, vandalism of computers its disheartening.

Brexiters Trump defence "we got punched in the face, Europe got kicked in the balls." Brexit punched Europe in the face, the UK kicked itself in the balls. Our consolation is that America also kicked itself in the balls. The result, everyone has bruised balls, only Britain has a black eye.

This board outside a coffee shop at Nottingham station is from January 2018. The US has won tbis competition, (even while we're still pursuing Brexit.)
Chalkboard from Jan 2018:

We're winning but Anerica has a TRUMP card!"

We assumed Brexiters wanted to "take back control" to help the UK. Turns out they just want the right to harm without consequence, to the extent that they defend anyone's right to do so. Utter madness.
