tbf to the Krusty burger Chalmers seemed to enjoy them. With another character I'd say we could chalk that up to mere courtesy, but it's not in Chalmers' nature to be generous to Skinner

The end thinks it's subverting something, but overall it's just doing this yet again:
A Tumblr post by banderboucher: "Dude filmmaker: We wanted to cleverly critique the way women are brutalised then sidelined in films. To do this, we had the women in our film brutalised then sidelined. I think you'll find it incredible; I found it so good that at one point in the film you can hear me audibly groaning "ahhh, cinema" from behind the camera."

The season moves on. You put the car up on Craigslist. A nice man who seems unlikely to haggle suddenly insists on inspecting the car in person “On account of all those Biberty issues” he says, “Nothing gets that out of the upholstery ”

I think it’s also suggested by the existence of the Ralph and Sam cartoons, which are nearly the same premise with the added joke of them being dispassionate clockpunchers. Like ok, if these two are doing it for a paycheck, why are Coyote and the Roadrunner doing it?

GBBO completely robbed me of the idea that watching a bunch of scripted British TV over the years has given me any understanding of their day-to-day lives. E.g. the sheer number of times they say "millionaire's shortbread" in an average season, a term I’ve never heard spoken outside the tent

A 7 panel comic by the artist. First panel: The artist is running from a distance towards a group of people playing basketball in the park. The artist is holding a pumpkin above their head and screaming "AAAAAAAAA". Second panel: The artist has leapt up and is in position to slam dunk the pumpkin into the basketball hoop. Panel three: the pumpkin splatters violently against the backboard of the basketball hoop, sending orange pumpkin goop everywhere. Panel four: the players stand staring, covered in pumpkin goop and shocked. Panel five: the artist stares at them wide-eyed, also covered in the goop and says "it's October FIRST". Their hand reaches towards their face. Panel six: the artist rips off their own face like a rubber mask to reveal a skeleton beneath. Panel 7: the group of players stand shocked and horrified, watching as the skeleton falls to the ground in a pile of bones, the sound effects says "CLATTER".

Lobbying too! I dunno what it feels like to have people come to you and say “We’ve identified you as someone who can make a critical difference on an issue of huge importance.” But I’m guessing by the time you agree to champion the issue you probably think it’s at least a bit important

a key reason why rape culture persists is because men do not fear reprisals from *other men*. they do not expect other men to care if they raped someone. they do not expect other men to treat them poorly. they believe that most men will doubt a victim's story and demand evidence.

What are some examples of amazing lead performances in less than good movies? I finally got around to watching King of New York and it’s an amazing Christopher Walken performance, but the movie’s not too far from being a huge mess

Widow’s Bay is interesting in this regard because I’d say just about every episode is trying a somewhat different ratio of comedy-to-horror. Some ratios were more successful than others, some I’ve just never even seen tried before. So, an uneven show, buti had a lot of fun watching it

A lot of directors like that too! This is such an American problem, we popularized the most collaborative artform this side of cathedral construction, but often struggle to recognize the talents of people involved unless they’re capable of doing 2 or 3 of the top jobs all by themself

I ran into one of these near me! It was yelling at a guy in a parked car that, as far as I could tell, didn’t exist. The sound quality was so bad I wasn’t sure if it was AI in the moment, but something about the way it kept throwing out different descriptions made me very suspicious

I think the streaming services are woefully underutilizing the expressive powers of the platforms they’ve built. Has Netflix done anything creative with the fact that everyone watches TV on computers now, besides a couple choose-your-own-adventure experiments 8 years ago?

Great point about Keeley being so isolated from the team. Something that worked really well in previous seasons was Keeley working with individual players to find the right marketing opportunities for them. Would she even know how to do that with any of these players?

Yep, totally agree about Zelda btw. The show gave itself a very tough job establishing a new team in just 10 episodes, then decided to give a bunch of time to an off-the-field character with no clear direction who steals focus in Rebecca & Keeley scenes

Really good question given how the episode also framed the idea of overpaying for club shares as a villainous, explicitly emotionally driven action. Are we supposed to be admiring Rebecca as a “rational” business owner who’s sadly but firmly sticking to paying her team in gift baskets?

It fits well within the rest of the movie too. ST:TPM wants the audience to take their time contemplating big spectacle, it’s in that 2001 mold

5 seconds of reading about Beoga taught me that the founding members are from Northern Ireland specifically. Presumably they spent some formative time there during the 90s? So does Sheeran just not talk to the people in his life or ???

One of the things I love about streaming era Trek is how adamant the producers have been that Lower Decks is not only canon, but in the same timeline as all the other shows. For me that opens up a really beautiful view on canon, one that points right at what you’re saying here

Humor is also a pretty well documented response when a lot of children witness a death like that. There have been folklore studies of the jokes told by children who saw events like the Challenger explosion, or Budd Dwyer’s death, on TV

I first learned about this through a random baseball fact: Chimpanzees, despite being much stronger than us, can’t throw a fastball. They top out at around 22 mph. Your average little leaguer throws twice as fast

Need an option that lets me clarify that I pronounce it this way specifically because of Who Shot Mr. Burns Part 2
A screenshot of a question from a dialect quiz about how to pronounce “the word used for gawking at someone in a lustful way”. The selected choice reads: “oggle” (pronounced to rhyme with
“boggle”, but may still be spelled
ogle")

I thought it was a solid 3/4. I’m glad we have it, there aren’t enough live-action animated films and it does that extremely well, but in terms of great Looney Tunes movies I think The Day the Earth Blew Up is much stronger and that just came out 2 years ago

The underwhelming performance of the Fantastic Beasts movies seems to have put Rowling off the idea of doing anything remotely new, and she’s still involved enough that nobody else has the space to take any risks
