I’m not allowed to start a new sewing project 😑

Thinking about Dressmaker, but also thinking about buying fabric and making something. But not the part where I have to hunch over cutting patterns (I should get a sit stand desk for that)

Getting a large hankering to do some sewing, maybe I can get over the hump and get started this time

A little help from Earth 🌍 On 28 September, our Juice spacecraft flew by Earth, using our planet’s gravity to adjust its course towards Jupiter, increasing its speed by 3.5 km/s while using very little fuel. Next up: another Earth flyby in 2029, before Jupiter in 2031. 🔗 esa.int/Science_Expl...

Would I watch a movie/TV adaptation of any of the Culture novels? Maybe, but I feel like any modern studio would mangle the anti-capitalist overtones. I could see them being turned into a multi-season prestige show though, one season for each book, you'd need to for enough detail

Saw some great birds today on our hike

Three woodpeckers (acorn woodpeckers???) perched in a hole-filled tree.

Two ravens perched on top of a pine tree. The tree line was filled with them all doing the same thing - perching on the highest point of the tallest trees, and watching a pair of red-tailed hawks flying around the meadow below.

A red-tailed hawk, wings spread gliding on a thermal or something. It was followed with a constant escort of annoyed ravens, and watched by dozens more in the trees. They weren't attacking it, but they were shepherding it away from the tree line

A small blackbird perched in the dry grass. I think it's a brewer's blackbird but I'm no good at identifying blackbirds that aren't ravens, crows, coots, or scrub jays

Honestly I find the coding to be the easy part of making a game, the hard part is learning concepts & setting up UI elements

In today's day & age it is excessively important that you're kind to yourself. Your work has value even if you don't get as many likes/comments as you were hoping for. People still stopped to like your work even if it's only 1 or 2. Your work still has value if it's only for you. Likes don't = worth

Really need to do a dev blog on the state of my orbital mechanics sim. It’s not really fresh in my mind anymore but we’re still early enough I can go back over my code

120

Silver 🏳️‍⚧️ Alicorn @silveralicorn.online · 16/09/2026

I’ve almost got enough of the background sim stuff for my game done that I can finally get back to actually making it a game.

Well, surface bases are coming along - I'm trying out a new atmospheric shader and figuring out how I'm gonna do day-night cycles with it

1111

Silver 🏳️‍⚧️ Alicorn @silveralicorn.online · 13/09/2026

Well Godot does NOT like rendering very large spheres up close (the vertices jitter a lot, probably actually a video card limitation) so for surface bases, I'm probably going to put a "ground" mesh underneath. Would be nice if it could mirror the texture of the planet it's on though

010

Silver 🏳️‍⚧️ Alicorn @silveralicorn.online · 12/09/2026

Ok so how DO I calculate a launch window anyway? I'm not sure how to correlate the ground lat/long with the target orbit's parameters

130

Silver 🏳️‍⚧️ Alicorn @silveralicorn.online · 12/09/2026

Hoping the latest version of Godot doesn't crash when I have the shader editor up

Silver 🏳️‍⚧️ Alicorn @silveralicorn.online · 12/09/2026

Wellllllll I finally figured out what was up with my shadows (the shadow caster was getting frustum culled) so now I can do eclipse shadows!

Silver 🏳️‍⚧️ Alicorn @silveralicorn.online · 12/09/2026

I sorta feel like re-litigating a rant I made on Cohost, so strap in - Anyway I started thinking about this again when I saw the flush door handles on a Tesla, which got me thinking about the difference between "looking cool" and "being fit for purpose"

It's always weird using my earbuds all day & then switching to my proper headphones, they have so much more 3-dimensionality

Silver 🏳️‍⚧️ Alicorn @silveralicorn.online · 11/09/2026

I am considering w/ Orbital Dawn that I should go back to a single-precision build for better compaitibilty. I can do the high precision math with custom functions. This’d solve issues w/ the physics engine and drawing shadows BUT I wouldn’t be able to do seamless scene transitions anymore

Silver 🏳️‍⚧️ Alicorn @silveralicorn.online · 11/09/2026

Something I should highlight here is Orbital Dawn is explicitly a sandbox game, there’s enough space combat games to go around. The environment is the challenge!

040

Silver 🏳️‍⚧️ Alicorn @silveralicorn.online · 11/09/2026

Yeah, working on Orbital Dawn seems likely. I kinda forgot what I was working on last though! I vaguely remember shadows and eclipses

211

Silver 🏳️‍⚧️ Alicorn @silveralicorn.online · 10/09/2026

Thinken hard about the technical direction Orbital Dawn needs to take as I’m gearing up to work on it some more

Silver 🏳️‍⚧️ Alicorn @silveralicorn.online · 09/09/2026

Apropos to my current Dark Souls run, now I’m thinking of an action RPG that lets you actually be a thief/burglar such that you’re rewarded for finding secret passages, traps, and stealing from NPCs etc, though that kind of game design can be tricky
