Also, what's her purity test? My grandfather was born in The Bold Forester pub just outside of Southampton. Can you get more English than being born in an English pub? But my other grandfather was born in Budapest. Does that disqualify me from having a cultural identity?

Dear @newstatesman1913.bsky.social, how do I turn off auto-renew on my New Statesman subscription? The steps suggested on your help pages don't help. It's not clear how to select the 'Actions' button that doesn't exist on the 'My Account' page. Is this what Andy Burnham means by subscription traps?

And I'll bet that the effect is even stronger the further you get from your identity group. I get more endorphins out of the imagined stupidity of uneducated white folks in the US bible belt than from metropolitan intellectuals in East London. I'm not comfortable with this, but I know it's true.

Why do we enjoy assuming others are stupid? I wonder if there is an evolutionary benefit to expecting others to make different (irrational) choices than we would when faced with the same circumstances. Maybe it helps us predict the actions of others if we expect them to be different (irrational).

I am very happy that we are expanding Registered Reports to all disciplines in which we publish, which is all areas of natural, clinical and social sciences, engineering & public health. We’ve learned a lot since 2023 when we first invited RRs; we are ready to expand 🧪 www.nature.com/articles/d41...

Nature is expanding Registered Reports to all the fields in which we publish
Registered Reports improve the credibility of scientific claims by rewarding big questions, sound methods and solid analyses. They need to become a standard tool in research.

The main argument I've read appears to be that we need bioethanol to produce CO2 as a byproduct. But if it's cheaper to buy bioethanol from elsewhere, then CO2 is the product, and bioethanol is the byproduct.

It seems to me that if we believe in free trade, we should believe in free trade. That's not to say that there might not be nationally strategic reasons to protect domestic bioethanol production, but I'd be interested to hear them.
