25 years ago so many lost friends, colleagues, family. I had friends at all three sites, and lost many more brothers and sisters since. Today, we will grieve and remember and serve. And I will continue to work in whatever ways I can for a better, more just and peaceful, world.

The June forecast from the NMME ensemble is out for the upcoming #ElNiño. The ensemble mean (thick black line on the first chart) is right around +2.2°C. That's on the roughly same level as the 2015-16 and 1997-98 El Niños, and a bit weaker than the 1982-83 El Niño.

My MS thesis had a chapter called ‘What’s a Whale Worth?’ where I compared & ground-truthed non-market valuation models for cetacea to argue for ways to incorporate conservation & protection into economic modeling & budgetary processes. This is an appalling inverse of that study.

The tech industry props up the richest people on the planet and pays far less than its fair share of taxes. It can absolutely afford its own R&D. But instead, it’s effectively hijacked our public science infrastructure because having more wealth than anyone could ever spend is still not enough.

I have somewhat nuanced thinking on this. We definitely need to robustly support basic research. otoh, use-inspired/translational research is a natural outgrowth and is critical for NSF to support. We need a balance. But, a working scientist would be a better fit. www.science.org/content/arti...
