I did a couple shows during COVID's height and oh my god the terrible Sophie's Choice between the absolute energy suck of hearing nothing or people treating a live show like a second-screen thing, arguing with the spouse, eating right up on the mic, etc. One had an actual good person just handling

Like numbers that they just decided are good enough. Like something is an "outlier" if it's 1.5 * the difference between the 75th and 25th quartile higher than the 75th quartile or lower than the 25th quartile. There isn't anything magic about thus numbers, they're just good enough, I guess?

LGBTQ+ youth are hugely overrepresented in homeless populations cos their folks kick them out or chase them out. Where is the moral panic over that? Why do we, as a culture, place the blame for bad relationships on abused kids and not their abusers?

The moral panic around estrangement is backlash against the small amount of cultural progress we have made for familial abuse survivors. Against the idea that parents don't get to hurt their kids, against the absolute tyranny of the heteropatriarchal family.

There's also a general common-law thing that you're entitled to "quiet enjoyment" of your own property, letting you sue for a nuisance. Not very easy to win if they argue you could "just" get blackout curtains, but it is a thing
