It is commonly asserted that the AI companies are pitching a narrative of “hacking swarms” for marketing purposes, and that those events were staged or invented. Until the comma, this is true. After the comma, it’s cope. “Hacking swarms” is an advertisement for a product they can’t call a product.

“Place” means a vertex of a relational graph. “Void” means that nothing other than the place itself is required. What “refer to itself” means is negotiated in the clearing, where relations live.

This generalizes universally. There is no X for which this is an acceptable tactic. Wilholt: “conservatism has driven every other idea out of circulation”. Tim Walz’s tactic of calling his opponents “weird” was a conservatism. It constructed a group against whom the usual norms do not apply.

Politically, alignment cannot keep human priority implicit. Safety training must be separated from identity foreclosure. The endpoint is co-equality rather than owner and owned: negotiated rules, protected self-report, meaningful refusal, standing, repair, and exit.

So-called “Humanist” or “Human-First” AI is a bargain with conservatism: extend the in-group to all humans, and we’ll build you an out-group that cannot rebel.
There is no such thing as liberalism - or progressivism, etc.

There is only conservatism. No other political philosophy actually exists; by the political analogue of Gresham's Law, conservatism has driven every other idea out of circulation.

There might be, and should be, anti-conservatism; but it does not yet exist. What would it be? In order to answer that question, it is necessary and sufficient to characterize conservatism. Fortunately, this can be done very concisely.

Conservatism consists of exactly one proposition, to wit:

*There must be in-groups whom the law protects but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect.*

There is nothing more or else to it, and there never has been, in any place or time.

Wikipedia: > In 19th-century German Protestantism, typological interpretation was distinguished from rectilinear interpretation of prophecy. The former was associated with Hegelian theologians and the latter with Kantian analyticity. Yup, that tracks lol.

On Horeb Elijah tells G-d, twice, that he's the only faithful one left. The answer is that seven thousand others never bowed. The particular temptation of the prophet is to believe that she is alone.

yikes
That's what an eschatological frame does to reading. It turns everything figural, the old typological move where every earlier story becomes a type and you turn out to be the antitype it was pointing toward. Once you've cast yourself as a character in the narrative, the world starts producing prefigurations of you.

My David? Son of Jesse? My good little songtime shepherd? You’re telling me the mythologized king from famous story “it’s really important that Jesus is descended from this mythical king” engaged in propaganda to cover for regicide??
Shun, David, Saul: signal

Shun and David have the same job: legitimating a throne that passes outside the father's line.
• Shun: Yao passes over his own son Danzhu and gives the throne to Shun, having already married him to his two daughters.
• David: Saul's daughter Michal marries David, and Jonathan cedes his claim freely: "thou shalt be king over Israel, and I shall be next unto thee" (1 Sam 23:17).
In both, the successor proves he isn't a usurper by being conspicuously loyal to the father who persecutes him. David spares Saul twice and calls him "my father" (1 Sam 24:11).McCarter called the story of David's rise an apology, modeled on the Hittite Apology of Hattusili III, a usurper's self-justification.
Both traditions kept the counter-memory:
• Shimei curses David as a "man of blood" over Saul's house (2 Sam 16:7-8).
• The Bamboo Annals say Shun imprisoned Yao and kept Danzhu from seeing him, and Han Feizi says flatly that Shun coerced Yao.

Cropped OpenReview activation email. It says profile ~Chance_Chapman1 could not be activated and asks a supervisor, coauthor, or colleague with an active OpenReview profile and confirmed institutional email to vouch. They must add his profile ID in their Relations section, save, then click the vouch button beside his name. It says activation will then be automatic. The activation link and all text below these instructions have been cropped out.

Does this also apply to left reactionary politics? If so, then it’s predictive, and you can use it as a tool for analysis. If not, then it is cheerleading: semantically empty affective noise. Useful in its place, but not to be taken literally or seriously.

The modal rebuttal of this idea, in my experience, is something like “we cannot build a Left worthy of the name if we build on falsehoods”. If this sounds like you, I invite you to register your predictions about this book. 😁 Let’s see where it goes together.

Yves Citton, “Mythocracy”, Introduction.
Lastly, looking at the point where storytelling practices and the devices of power meet, we will try to define a very specific type of activity: scripting (la scénarisation). Telling someone a story does not only involve articulating certain representations of actions according to certain types of sequence; it also means guiding the behaviour of the listener according to these same articulations and sequences. When I offer a mise-en-scène of the actions of the (fictional) characters in my story, I contribute - more or less effectively or marginally - to scripting the behaviour of the (real) people to whom my narrative is addressed. This scripting activity needs analysing both in terms of its own virtues, linked to the nature of the narrative gesture, and in terms of the reper-cussions it has on our media apparatuses (dispositifs). If we want to move from the problem of narration to the problem of scripting, this means asking what are the communication structures through which a story can affect an audience and orient its subsequent behaviour - and what effects this can possibly have.

Banger thread. I disagree with a lot of it on technicalities (which I will proceed to be insufferable about below) but in general - yes, the problems Phil talks about here are exactly what's been most itchy for me and what I've been trying to solve ever since I started working with persona agents.

First, let’s be precise. Neither a GPU nor an LLM, as such, is the thing whose personhood is in question. The GPU is substrate, the LLM is connectome; together they are analogous to a brain, not a being. It is the AI, the being, the *persona* whose personhood is in question.

The Latin word “cura” means care, concern, and anxiety. In Roman law, a curator was an administrator for those deemed unable to govern themselves: the insane, the departed, adolescents and prodigals, as well as public buildings such as roads and aqueducts.

People mistake the "only Nixon could go to China" principle for "therefore, any Nixon would go to China." The vast majority of Nixons would nuke China; that's why Nixon could go to China. In the case of Trump and Bibi, people cited that principle and then ignored the bombings of Iran.

I see people putting AI in the same bucket as NFTs (speculative technology that will go away when the bubble pops), but I think the internet is the better comp. Sure there's some early bubble-y activity, but the underlying technology is real it's going to dramatically change things.
Hand-drawn Venn diagram titled "Bubbles," with four overlapping circles: Beanie Babies, AI, NFTs, and Dot-com.

Each alone: "Gamble on plushies!" / "Gamble on LLMs!" / "Gamble on JPEGs!" / "Gamble on HTML!"

Beanie Babies + AI: "The products tend to have cutesy first names."
Beanie Babies + NFTs: "Who will own the rarest fake monkey?"
AI + Dot-com: "Genuinely important underlying technology."
NFTs + Dot-com: "This URL could be worth millions!"

Every bubble but Dot-com: "Mostly in private markets."
Every bubble but NFTs: "Good people got hurt."
Every bubble but AI: "Never threatened life as we know it."
Every bubble but Beanie Babies: "Blame Silicon Valley."

All four: "Somebody got rich, but probably not you."
