Vanguard Cave, Gibraltar, is known today for Neanderthal behavioral evidence, including a remarkable controlled hearth for production of pitch from gum rockrose. In 2021, the team discovered a chamber sealed for more than 40,000 years, results to come! www.johnhawks.net/p/a-visit-to...

Paul Klee "Fish Magic" (1925) Oil and Watercolor on Canvas on Panel 77.2 cm × 98.4 cm (30.4 in × 38.7 in) Philadelphia Museum of Art, Philadelphia, USA. #ArtSky #Klee
"Fish Magic" a famous 1925 Surrealist painting by the Swiss-German artist Paul Klee.
Key Details & Context
Style and Technique: The artwork features an intermingling of aquatic, celestial, and earthly entities. Klee achieved this mysterious atmosphere by covering the canvas with a dense underlayer of multicolored pigments and then overlaying it with a delicate surface of black paint. He then scratched and scrawled into the black surface to reveal the colors underneath.
Central Elements: The composition prominently includes floating fish, a clock tower, flowers, planets, and a small human-like figure at the bottom.

Very interesting read and seems there's still a lot to unravel. Some parallels with the grieving behavioural processes of some cetaceans, perhaps? Also, a thoughtful paragraph from #JohnHawks on the loss of loved ones. #primates #hominins #mothers #grieving #cetaceans #caregivers #Infanticide

The preprints from the 80/20 admixture hypothesis look crazily exciting. One thing that's missing is a wider holistic viewpoint from a cultural and social perspective. Hopefully, they'll eventually align!

Population A and Population B split 1.5 million years ago only to merge (hook-up) some 1.2million years later. This resulted in an early human population: 80% of our contemporary genetic variant comes from population A with 20% coming from B. Also see Neandersovan branch split from A.

"The fact that people are multidimensional in their sex-related biological traits means that the binary view of sex is fundamentally misleading. Biological sex has variations and nuances, just as gender does." Why wouldn't biological sex be as multidimensional as other aspects of our existence.

Impressive genetic hack to see the Jomon hunter-gatherer folk sustain, and further adapt, a migration into increasingly cold conditions. Also an example of convergent evolution (parallel too???) as the Greenlandic Inuit have independently developed similar adaptations to cold conditions.

Proteomic analysis detected human and animal blood, with specific proteins suggesting some human blood may have been sourced postpartum, inferring a ritualistic link between the Luoyue, fertility and the painted images. The blood mixed with lime and clay also increased the arts longevity.

Once owned by (vice-president) Nelson Rockefeller (from the Rockefeller clan), now being kept in the Cleveland Museum of Art. 100%, a symbol of fertility, matriarchal/ community resistance and, I'd guess, alienation. And a pretty cool minimalist design which had a significant impact on Cubism.
