I wish we had a major publisher who understood: The #TTRPG community IS the product. Make things that feed the community, and the community will sustain your livelihood. I just don't see WotC mindfully applying that as a strategy. So thats an opportunity for smaller shops.

but it may be worth it to convert an uncertain deadline into a certain one. Communication is the key. It's when things are going poorly that you most need to talk to people. Be someone whom your freelancers won't hesitate to talk to.

fulfillment, I let them know. If there's big impact, I may need to take the assignment off their hands, give partial payment for the partially-completed work, and turn it over to someone else for completion. Most of the time, that would make it even later,

What's new in my approach is that I treat the freelancer like a professional and tell them matter-of-factly what the impact of the delay will be. Sometimes, it's not much. It may only mean the freelancer is affected. But if it creates more work for someone else, or risks delaying Kickstarter

Since I don't ask reasons, I don't judge whether a reason is "good enough." I also personally HATE it when a project manager demands a new deadline right after they've been told there's an unforeseen problem. So I don't do that.

That can be anything, by the way, from executive function disruption to financial hardship to illness. When freelance work is late, it's late for a reason. That reason is usually none of my business. I ask if the freelancer is all right, not what's wrong.

First, I have a heretical view about deadlines. I don't think getting testy or badgering people is effective. I believe freelancers want to get their work done on time, and when they don't, it's because of some adverse circumstance, usually in their life outside of the project.

A funny thing happened when I was playtesting for Magonomia the #TTRPG of Renaissance wizardry yesterday. I wanted to try out a monster (a hydra) and the players pretty much refused to hurt it. The rules provided plenty of ways to get past the monster and the players kept getting creative.

In other words, *stalled* investigation gets boring. Adventure writers (including GMs who homebrew your adventures), you can keep a mystery story fast paced if you have a plan to interrupt the players with new events or information when the investigation pauses.

We're working on a mystery adventure (much too early to say more) and I learned this from playtesting it: Roleplaying the PCs investigating, asking questions and finding clues, is not slow or boring. Getting to the end of a line of inquiry and not knowing what to try next is slow or boring.

In a D&D like #TTRPG there is more than one way to give PCs magic items. Sure, adventurers can find them in a tomb. But consider having them right some wrong for a ghost or spirit, then the spirit agrees to possess their weapon, making it enchanted, and help them for the rest of their career.
