I’m increasingly convinced that we misuse the phrase “resistance to change.” Often people aren’t resisting the future. They’re protecting their competence, identity, influence or security. That makes agency one of the most important leadership tools we have. sherryheyl.substack.com/p/p...

People Don't Resist Change. They Resist Feeling Defenseless.
Last week, I argued that organizations aren’t machines. They’re living systems made up of people, relationships, habits, and history.

Career paths are becoming less predictable because roles themselves are changing. The next great leader may not have prepared for the role at all. They may simply be the person capable of stepping into uncertainty and helping everyone else navigate what comes next. youtu.be/61b2hTMamhY?si=wBy...

The more AI advances, the less convinced I am that the biggest challenge is technical. The real advantage will belong to organizations that develop people who can question, collaborate, think strategically and exercise judgment. AI raises the value of being human.

I keep coming back to this idea with AI: progress doesn’t have to be dramatic to be transformative. Make one accountable improvement. Learn from it. Build on it. Keep human judgment involved. The future may belong to organizations that become better one deliberate step at a time.

The longer I work in change, the less I believe we can "manage" it. Organizations are living systems. Small actions ripple. People adapt. Conditions shift. Leadership is becoming less about controlling change and more about recognizing patterns. sherryheyl.substack.com/p/t...

The Biggest Lie in Change Management

I use AI, but I'm not trying to automate myself out of my own work. I want it to challenge my thinking, fill my gaps and make me incrementally better. Maybe the AI advantage isn't doing more without humans. Maybe it's helping humans become better at what we do. sherryheyl.substack.com/p/t...

People ask if AI will replace leaders. I think it's revealing them. Technology exposes cultures that already struggled to adapt. The organizations that thrive won't have the best AI. They'll have leaders who help people build the future together. amplifiedconcepts.com/about/

Everyone is calling Shadow AI a security problem. I think it's an organizational design problem. Employees aren't just bringing new tools. They're building intelligence systems that quietly become part of how work gets done. Leaders need to design for that reality.

The biggest AI lesson isn't about the technology. It's about people. Readiness gives people the skills. Guardrails provide direction. Trust gives them the confidence to use both. Organizations that understand this won't just adopt AI faster. They'll adapt better.

What happens when AI makes expertise increasingly abundant? Differentiation doesn’t disappear. It moves. Trust, judgment, relationships, and the experience of working together become harder to copy and therefore more valuable.

We were taught to learn, prove what we knew, then apply it for years. AI changes that equation. Information is abundant, and skills keep moving. The advantage shifts to people who stay curious, exercise judgment, apply what they learn, and repeat.

I’ve spent 20+ years watching technology transformations. The question I wish more leaders asked now isn’t “How fast can we deploy AI?” It’s “Who do we want to be on the other side of this?” Speed changes what you do. Leadership determines who you become. sherryheyl.substack.com/p/w...

I’m optimistic about AI because of what it can make possible. I’m cautious because of what it can amplify. Leaders shouldn’t only ask, “What can AI do?” We need to ask, “What happens when it does?” The consequences may matter far longer than the technology. sherryheyl.substack.com/p/t...

One thing experience with change has taught me: pushback is not automatically resistance. Sometimes the person questioning the plan can see a dependency, risk, or unintended consequence leadership missed. The question I want leaders asking is: What are they seeing that I’m not?
