it's a library research day for two audio commentaries I'm recording this month, for two very different films. I love it when research takes me to such different topics and places in the world to understand.
a stack of six library books: Paradoxes of time travel, cornish feasts and folklore
place attachment, the defense of berlin

Two extraordinary recent books I've read by Canadians: THE ANNUAL MIGRATION OF CLOUDS @premeemohamed.com a haunting coming-of-age novella in a dark post-apocalypse world; LAYAWAY CHILD by @csuther.bsky.social , tender and moving stories of women and children who navigate immigration to Canada.
On the left: the cover of the annual migration of clouds by Premee Mohamed. The base is an off-white colour, the author's name is across the top, the main image is of a bird with its wings beginning to extend, and the title in white font across its feathers. On the right, the cover of layaway child by Chanel Sutherland. The base colour is yellow, the title is split across the top and bottom, with an image of a woman and a child, holding hands, between them.

with alt text. The short version: @mark-carney.bsky.social is proving yet again that he is Harper 2.0, selling out Canadians for his corporate buddies.
But dig into the details and you learn national pharmacare is ending. There is no new money to create more child care spaces. Federal health-care spending is drastically being cut. Oh, and the government is looking at privatizing airports and ports — moves prime minister Stephen Harper didn’t even publicly contemplate.

Two years ago, prime minister Justin Trudeau announced with much fanfare the “first phase of a national pharmacare plan,” $1.5 billion over five years to cover a range of free contraception and life-saving diabetes medications. The plan — crafted under pressure from the NDP — was to study the initial roll out, and expand coverage to more drugs in the future. Trudeau said national pharmacare would strengthen the social safety net, and help Canadians get the care they needed.

Two terrific recent reads for me: Grey Dog, by Elliot Gish, and The Atrocities, by @jeremycshipp.bsky.social Terrific gothic stories about women teachers sent to strange places, dealing with forces supernatural and all too human as they struggle to keep themselves together. Highly recommended.
On the left, the cover of the book ‘Grey Dog’ by Elliot Gish. The background is red; the author’s name is in lower case across the top. The image taking up most the page is of a half-deer, half-wolf creature, the body and head of both on either side. The title of the book is in large cursive font across the bottom, with a quote below. On the right, the cover of the book ‘The Atrocities’ by Jeremy C. Shipp. The top is a grey background with a gothic house in black on the left. There is a red line from the house and moving in various straight lines, starting to follow a dark maze that takes up most of the rest of the cover. Across the middle is the title in white letters, and below that the author’s name.

Very happy to receive mine & @simonlaperriere.bsky.social 's contributors copy of “EXORCISMO: Defying a Dictator and Raising Hell in Post Franco Spain” Blu-ray set from @severinfilms.bsky.social ! Order today: severinfilms.com/en-ca/produc...
Three images from a Blu-ray box set. The first on the top left is the cover, with the words “EXORCISMO: Defying a Dictator and Raising Hell in Post Franco Spain” across the bottom. The image is of a man in black, with his eyes missing and blood running from the sockets. Behind him is an image of flames, and superimposed below him is the torso of a woman, her face staring out in pain, with stars covering her nipples. On the top left is from inside the box set booklet, a page showing the title of one of the essays, “The Good, The Bad, The Beautiful, The Devilish: The Women of Spanish Horror and S-Classified Films, by Shelagh Rowan-Legg”. The bottom centre image shows two men string up, wearing only g-strings, with a sacrificial altar between them, surrounded by candles. Below that is a young woman, her hair west and partially covering her face, which itself looks like it is about to scream.

today I begin my big project of 2026: turning this binder of 16 months of research, into a book on Eloy de la Iglesia for the Hidden Horror Histories imprint. I've got a reasonable timeline to keep a steady pace of outline and writing. I expect many mochas will be consumed.
the image of the side of a black binder, between whose covers are hundreds of pages of paper filled with research from books, films, and my own thoughts on the early films of Spanish filmmaker Eloy de la Iglesia. words from Alice Notley:

Poetry outlasts everything. It’s a primeval spirit. It’s probably the first speech. It comes with speech. It’s what children do, when they play with their first words. And it comes from nowhere, and it always goes on. And there’s no way to lose it, but people don’t know how to find it. People think they don’t know how to read it, and that they don’t have any need for it. Maybe they don’t have any need for it. I don’t know. The world has poetry inside it anyway.
