With gross national debt topping $40T, the Administration wants to reduce capital gains taxes by only taxing “real” gains??Overwhelmingly benefits the wealthy. And BTW, wage increases are fully taxed on the full nominal amount, even as inflation eats up the average household’s, wage-reliant income.

Treasury’s bond buybacks are backdoor QE, but if the government is going to do it, I’d rather it be Treasury than the Fed. At best, it’s a bandaid. There is no place to hide on the real solution. Get the $%# deficits down!

The sad truth is market players don’t want to do their own work. They want the Fed to tell them what’s going to happen. That way they can blame the Fed if things turn out differently.

Scratching my head at the Nixon renaissance among MAGAs. Nixon was classic moderate GOP: international (opened up to China, detente with Soviets); civil rights (Title IX, school desegregation, EEO for contractors); environment (EPA, Clean Air Act), etc. Far cry from the Trump agenda.

Thank goodness! Other big beneficiaries are Jay Powell, who belatedly supported Cook, and of course, Chairman Warsh and the Board which can hike rates if needed to fight inflation, without fear of being fired.

In Callais, the Supreme Court ignored precedent and statutory language to require proof of intent for a voting rights claim. Now apparently even proof of intent is not enough, even when found by a 3 judge panel that included 2 Trump appointees.

It’s clear, or should be, that Powell can stay on as governor but not as clear he can stay on as interim chair if the President designates someone else. He could theoretically stay on as FOMC chair who is elected by FOMC members.

I worked with Kevin Warsh during the 9/11 attacks when I was at Treasury and he was at the WH, and again during the 2008 financial crisis when I led the FDIC and he was a Fed governor. He’s smart, a steady hand, and always maintained a Main Street, not a Wall Street, focus. He’s a great choice.
